YPSILANTI, Mich. - A quartet of Falcons earned the Bronze medal while also breaking the university 200-medley relay record during the opening race of the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. En route to setting a second historical finish in the 800-free relay, Bowling Green earned additional team points and a fourth place finish. The Falcons join archrival Toledo in a tie for fourth overall after one day of competition with 62 total points. Miami, Eastern Michigan and Ohio control the view from the top with 68 total points.
In the past three years, Bowling Green has set at least one new program record at the MAC meet. Today's achievements are the second and third relay records to fall under the tenure of head coach Keri Buff. The 200-free relay time was reestablished at the MAC meet in 2005.
Alisha Yee paced the Falcons early winning the first leg of the race in 26.39. Meg Richardson, Michael Carriaga, and Frankie Houck kept the Falcons in medal contention as the four went on to combine for a final time of 1:44.94. The third place time surpasses the 1:45.87 record set in 1992. The medal marks the first relay MAC keepsake for each of the swimmers. Richardson and Houck join elite company as the freshman medaled in their first conference championship race.
Miami won the sprint relay in 1:44.11 finishing just ahead of the Ohio relay squad. The Bobcats took home the Silver and a time of 1:44.64.
The Orange and Brown narrowly missed a second medal as the trifecta of Caroline Keating, Jen Wright and Sami Jordan joined Yee to battle in the distance free relay. Despite missing out on a conference souvenir, the foursome broke the longest standing BGSU relay record which was set in 1990. Their final time of 7:30.44 shaved nearly three minutes off the old record of 7:33.30.
Defending overall champion Eastern Michigan broke pool, MAC and league Championship meet records while swimming an NCAA Consideration B time with their winning time of 7:21.80. Once again, Ohio finished second (7:26.57).
The Falcons will return to the pool tomorrow as the stage is set for the first full day of events. Times and events are listed below.
