KENT, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) -
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"I can't express how fun it is to coach this group, and what a pleasure it has been. They have so much heart and determination. This is a really, really tough place to play, and there were a lot of reasons why we could have folded tonight. Kent played very physical and aggressive basketball, and came right at us. But, the character of this team is unbelievable, and they just keep rising to challenge after challenge. They were unbelievable tonight, and our bench was a huge part of the win, scoring over 40 points for us."
(Yesterday, you said that Amber Flynn was the best sixth man in the MAC, ever. Was tonight a ringing endorsement?)
"Ever. The best sixth man ever. That's how good she is. And, I wish we could have an A and B (for the MAC's Sixth Man of the Year award), because (Lindsey) Goldsberry's right there too, with all the deflections she gets, and everything she brings us. But, I think Amber Flynn, as a senior post player in this league, has become the best sixth man ever in this conference. That's how valuable she is in this program. She could start in the post for almost any program in the midwest, and we are very fortunate that she provides a spark for us off the bench each and every game."
(Why did your team get off to a slow start tonight?)
"First of all -- I don't care (that we have a 29-game) win streak at home -- this is one of the toughest places to play in the country. We came in with a great deal of respect for Kent State. But sometimes, you can almost respect someone so much that you are not playing your game. I have said for the last four years that the aggressor and the team that plays harder wins this game, wins this series. Clearly, Kent was the aggressor early on. ... I think we were on our heels a little bit in the beginning, because they have such good team speed, and they can really dribble attack you. But, once we got in more passing lanes and got some deflections, we finally buckled down. Turnovers were the big story for us tonight."
"This is a storybook ending for our kids on the road. Could our seniors have a better opportunity than to end their road careers at Kent State, against the best coach in the history of this conference, and against a very talented, deep team that has six seniors themselves? We talked about it: this is the way you are going to go out, with a true road game, and it couldn't be a better story. You get to write the ending -- are you going to go out with a win at the M.A.C. Center, which hardly anyone does, or are you going to get beat in your last road game? What a great opportunity for the seniors, and I am really proud of them."
SENIOR Amber Flynn
(How many different motivational speeches does Coach Miller have, and do you think you have heard all of them?)
"We have heard all of them. I don't know how many there are, but we have definitely heard all of them."
"We have a lot of nagging injuries, and a lot of people who have been sick. I don't know what they all have ... I just knew that, like any other game, I needed to be a spark for my team. We feed off each other, and I figured if I could get us going, a lot of other people could get us going as well. Actually, Carin got me going, because she was a spark from the beginning, and I just fed off of that."
(On Miller's comments about her)
"I'm flattered. I really appreciate the compliment, and I would say he's probably the reason why I am where I am now. It is very good to hear that he notices what I am doing."
SENIOR Carin Horne
"This team is like a family. We all want the same goals, and that motivates us all the time. We all want the same common goals, and coach is the same way himself. He recruited us as players and as family, and he has those goals himself. We all are here to do a job."
(What got you going at the start of the second half?)
"Another hard-nosed, motivational speech at halftime. (Coach Miller) came in and basically told us what we needed to do. We weren't hitting the boards at all in the first half, and that was a major factor. I just took the initiative to make that a goal of mine in the game, to try to give us a boost. I just tried to play hard."
(What does it mean to you to clinch the outright MAC regular-season championship?)
"As a senior, it's great. You always want to go out on top. It is a great experience, especially with this group of teammates. It's motivation; we want more, we don't settle for less. We don't look at records, we don't look at past history. We look at the future, at the next game."
SOPHOMORE Lindsey Goldsberry
"We knew it was going to be a physical game, and we know that defense is what Kent State is known for. It has always been that way. We knew that we had to come out, match their intensity and do the same thing."
