BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons indoor track season will come to a close this weekend as they travel to Akron to compete at the 2007 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships set to take place on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons are looking to improve upon last year's tenth place finish. Under first year head coach Cami Wells, the team is looking to finish in the top-five this weekend.
"We are looking forward to competing at the indoor MAC championship meet this weekend," said coach Cami Wells. "The indoor championship is what we train for all fall and winter and the highlight of the indoor season. We have 21 athletes competing this weekend and I feel confident that each person we have competing will give their best effort."
The team has seen many positives throughout the season and hopes to cap off the successful season with a powerful performance this weekend and will be led by many veterans. It will also be the chance for some newcomers to compete in their first MAC championships.
"It will be an exciting weekend and the final indoor MAC championship for our seniors," said Wells. "Our senior athletes, Jessica White, Nicole Standback, Erica Wilson, Sharonda Alexander, Angie Raizis, Kim Settle, and Bridget Dalic have all been strong leaders for our team and consistent performers over the years so we want to make sure they finish their indoor careers on high note."
The Orange and Brown will also get help from distance standout Jamie Roflow, sophomore throwing sensation Takarra Dunning, as well as Yemoja Marotta, Lauren Bryant, Kara Butler, and Amanda Sefcik. Newcomers competing this weekend will be Andrea Pereira de Almeida, Hillary Hewit, Sabrina Forstein, Shantell Lewis, Danielle Thornton, Kristen Carver, Ashley Spates, and Crystal Burage.
Many of the Falcons appear in the top of the MAC performance list in their individual events due to their tremendous success throughout the season.
White, Standback, Roflow, and Dunning are just a handful of those who have seen much success this season. White is undefeated in the 200-meters and has only lost to one individual this season in the 60-meter dash (Lashonda Davis, Miami).
Standback has only lost the 60/55 meter hurdles once this season, winning a total of four times in the hurdles. She has also been successful in the 60-meter dash, placing second in the first meet of the season and third in the second meet. She won the All-Ohio Championship title in the hurdles.
Roflow has been the one of the driving forces for the Falcons distance corps for the entirety of her running career at Bowling Green. She is undefeated this season, winning the 5,000 in the first meet (17:29.49) and the mile in the second meet (5:01.39). She also won the 3,000 at the CMU meet 9:58.48. She was the All-Ohio Champion in the mile (5:00.18) as well as a member of the All-Ohio Champion Distance Medley Relay team, which ran the fastest DMR time since 2001.
Dunning has helped to keep the throwing group competitive throughout the season. She is the All-Ohio Champion in the shot put where she threw over three and a half feet farther than her previous personal best. She tossed the shot in a distance of 49-10.50, three feet farther than the seconds place finisher. She also has another win in the event during the second meet of the season as well as a second place finish during the first meet of the season and the CMU tri-meet.
Those won't be the only Falcons to help the team. Be on the look out for Marotta and Settle who are the team's top middle distance group and among the top in the MAC in the 800-meters.
The Distance Medley Relay will comprise of Danielle Thornton, Ashley Spates Angela Raizis, and Andrea de Pereira de Almeida. While there was only one DMR run this season, the Falcons are ranked second in the MAC in the event and hopes to be successful on Friday.
"Our goal all season has been to improve on individual and team performances and to get ourselves in a position to finish in the top 5 at this meet," said Wells. "I think we have the personnel and capability to finish as high as third if everything goes well. There are twelve teams at this meet and each team will be competitive so we can't overlook anyone, we just need to focus on being the best we can be and get the most we can from each opportunity."
