COLUMBIA, Mossouri - Saturday, the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team competed in a different type of competition. In the second day of the CAT Classic, instead of a team competition, an individual meet took place. The Falcons had two members competing in every event, and they recorded their highest score with Jholeen Ponce on beam. She scored a 9.725 and placed fifth.
On vault, Jacque Bernhardt recorded her lowest score on the season with a 9.550. Behind her in tenth place was Jenna Wirtanen scoring 9.525.
The bars rotation got the better of the two Falcon gymnasts, as Sakura Tomita and Ashlee deLeeuw placed ninth (9.275) and tenth (8.550).
Aside from a strong performance from Ponce on the beam, Megan Chronister finished tenth with a score of 9.150.
Rachel Gourley had a personal best last night on floor, scoring a 9.700. She followed up that performance tonight tying that score and finishing in sixth. Allison Swafford had a season low last night, scoring a 9.150, but tonight she finished tied for eighth with a score of 9.675.
After tonight's meet, the team will return home to BG for a much needed break and will spend their spring break in the gym resting up for their trip to Texas Women's University. They will see competition again on March 10 at 7:00 p.m. They will then come back to the comforts of home to compete against Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State, and 18th ranked Ohio State. That meet will honor fellow gymnast Jessica McArthur, who missed her senior season due to a kidney transplant. The meet will be on March 24 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
