BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team took a 10-2 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at Warren Steller Field Wednesday afternoon. Oakland hit nine Falcon batters in the game, the most recorded in an NCAA game since 2002, and only the fifth game it has ever happened. The all-time NCAA record is 10 hit batsmen in one contest.
Junior Nick Cantrell earned the win by allowing one run with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched. Sophomore Marty Baird had the play of the game with a bases-clearing triple off the wall in deep center field, good for three RBI. Freshman David Borcherdt picked up a three-bagger as well in the ball game, his first collegiate hit.
Oakland score first with a run in the second, but the Falcons blew it open with a five-run third inning. That inning was very bizarre as the Falcons scored three runs without recording a hit as six straight batters were either hit or walked. Senior Mike Barnard provided the fourth run with a single into right field. Freshman Derek Spencer executed a sacrifice fly next to hand BGSU a 5-1 advantage.
The fifth frame started in similar fashion when Bowling Green's first two batters reached bass after being struck by an Oakland pitch. Junior Andrew Foster's SAC bunt forced both runners into scoring position. Following another walk to load the bases, Spencer notched his second RBI of the game with a single into right field. Yet another hit batsmen loaded the bases later in the inning. Sophomore Marty Baird then stepped into the batter's box delivered the 3-RBI triple mentioned above.
The Grizzlies and Falcons each added one more run apiece for a 10-2 final score. Bowling Green's last run came off an Eric Lawson RBI-single that scored Borcherdt after his triple in the seventh inning.
Bowling Green will begin Mid-American Conference play this Friday at 3 PM, hosting Eastern Michigan. The Falcons and Eagles are scheduled to play at Steller field on Saturday and Sunday (both 1 PM start times) as well to cap off the weekend series.
