Four Bowling Green State University student-athletes visited two local schools this week and had lunch with students who were recognized for displaying good manners.
Women's basketball players Kate Achter and Liz Honegger visited Kenwood Elementary School on March 29 and football players Kevin Huelsman and Drew Nystrom had lunch at Crim Elementary School on March 30.
"I thought it was a great bonding experience for our student athletes," said J.D. Campbell Assistant A.D. for Communications. "The kids at each school did a terrific job of making Kate, Liz, Drew and Kevin feel welcome and I was amazed at how much they knew about each one of our student-athletes."
The Manners Matter program was initiated in Crim and Kenwood Elementary to help students improve their own manners and to encourage respect for fellow students and adults.
Responsible students are used as monitors to circulate through out the cafeteria and find students who use their manners- please and thank you, clean their space, keep their hands to themselves, use a quiet voice, help others if needed, etc. When a student is caught using their manners their name is entered into a weekly drawing for which they can choose a prize. At the end of the month a student from each class is chosen to eat lunch in the cafeteria with special guests.
"We really want to thank Bonnie Bennion and Sandy Sertell for inviting us to participate in the program," said Campbell. "Hopefully it is something we can expand on with each school in Bowling Green in some way in the future."
