BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A six-inning scoreless stint by the Falcon starting pitcher once again led Bowling Green to victory down in Bradenton, Florida. Juninor Dan Horvath did not allow a run in the first six innings Sunday after Senior Tyler Johnson did the same the day before. Both games ended with a shutout win for BGSU. Horvath gave up just two hits while striking out eight batsmen in the Falcons 11-0 defeat of IPFW.
Bowling Green exploded for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Brown and Orange added a run in the fourth and fifth innings, and a pair of scores in the eighth.
Sophomore Travis Owens and Senior Jeff Telmanik each recorded a homerun. Freshman Derek Spencer began his collegiate career with two hits in as many career at bats. Following Horvath's six innings on the mound, a trio of true freshmen made their Falcon debuts by each pitching one inning to finish off the win. Freshmen Phil Hettlinger, Richie O'Brien and Corey Weiland allowed a combined four hits, zero walks while striking out three Mastodons.
Things got ugly for the Mastodons right off the get-go with back-to-back walks to begin the game, followed by a fieling error to load the bases. A Josh Dietz sacrfice fly lit the scoreboard first for the Falcons. Next up was Sophomore Andrew Foster, who connected on an RBI-single. Later in the inning, Freshman Logan Meisler recorded his first career RBI. Also snatching a career first was Sophomore Travis Owens, a three-run homerun that gave Bowling Green a 7-0 edge after the first inning. Senior Jeff Telmanik also hit a homer, a two-run shot in the in the eighth.
Head Coach Danny Schmitz spread out the action, giving 26 different players some playing time against IPFW.
BGSU will take the field again Monday, March 5th at 1:00 PM with a matchup against Northeastern. The Huskies are 3-1 and coming off a 13-1 trouncing over Georgetown on Sunday.
