THE GAME
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after a third consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season championship, is in Cleveland for a quarterfinal-round game in the Kraft MAC Tournament ... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller (26-3, 15-1 MAC), the top seed in the East Division and the two-time defending MAC Tournament champions, will face the University of Toledo, a 64-49 winner over the University at Buffalo in Sunday's (March 4) first round ... tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena (20,500) ... the winner will advance to Friday's (March 9) semifinal round, playing in the day's second game (2:30 p.m.).
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Toledo, 36-25, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has captured each of the last eight meetings ... that eight-game winning streak belies how close the games have been ... in this year's lone regular-season meeting, the Rockets led for the first three-quarters of the game, and led by as many as 15 points, before the Falcons rallied ... senior Ali Mann spearheaded a 10-0 run late in the second half for a 73-62 victory at Anderson Arena on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 4, 2007) ... BG also had to rally from 15 points down last year, also on Super Bowl Sunday, as the Falcons posted a 71-65 road win over the Rockets (Feb. 5, 2006) ... that was the seventh-straight game in the series that had been decided by single digits ... the teams met again in the semifinal round of last year's conference tournament, with the Falcons capturing a 68-46 decision at The Q ... prior to BGSU's eight-game winning streak, Toledo had won three-straight meetings and seven-of-eight games over the Falcons.
MEMORABLE MATCHUPS
If Tuesday's BGSU-Toledo game is anything like the teams' last four regular-season meetings, fans at Quicken Loans Arena are in for quite a treat ... in 2004-05, the Falcons swept the Rockets in the two meetings, but outscored UT by just a point in regulation ... in the game at UT (Jan. 15, 2005), the Falcons trailed by four points with under two minutes left in overtime, but scored the last seven points for a 69-66 victory ... in the return match (Feb. 26, 2005), the Brown and Orange trailed by six points with 1:22 left in the game ... but Kelly Kapferer's three-point play with 9.1 seconds left lifted the Falcons to a 72-71 win on 'Senior Day' at Anderson ... last year, the Falcons trailed by 15 points - BG's largest deficit of the regular season - before rallying for a 71-65 road win over the Rockets (Feb. 5, 2006) ... BGSU picked up a 68-46 win over UT in last year's MAC Tournament semifinal matchup (March 10, 2006), then had to rally from another 15-point deficit in this year's regular-season meeting, winning 73-62 (Feb. 4, 2007).
BGSU-UT IN THE MAC TOURNAMENT
The Falcons have met Toledo eight times - more than any other opponent - in the MAC Tournament over the years ... BGSU holds a 5-3 lead in those meetings, with last year's game snapping a three-game tourney losing streak to the Rockets ... the Falcons are 0-1 in quarterfinal-round games vs. UT, with that quarterfinal meeing coming at Quicken Loans Arena (then Gund Arena) in 2001 ... in that meeting, #1-seeded UT trailed by a point at the half, but rallied for an 18-point win, 81-63, over the ninth-seeded Falcons ... BGSU is 3-2 against UT in semifinal-round games and 2-0 in championship-game matchups with the Rockets ... the teams are 1-1 in meetings at The Gund/The Q, with the Rockets winning the aforementioned 2001 game, and the Falcons winning by a 68-46 count in last year's MAC Tournament semifinals.
AWARD WINNERS
Several members of the BGSU women's basketball program picked up awards at the Kraft MAC Tournament banquet Saturday night (March 3) ... senior Ali Mann was a co-recipient of the MAC's Player-of-the-Year award, while classmate Amber Flynn was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year ... and, for the third consecutive season, BGSU's Curt Miller has been named the MAC Coach of the Year ... Mann was also named to the All-MAC First Team, while junior Kate Achter took second-team honors ... senior Carin Horne was chosen to the All-MAC Third Team, and senior Liz Honegger earned all-conference honorable mention ... a few Falcon facts ..
• Mann is just the second Falcon player to earn a league player-of-the-year honor ... Jackie Motcyka won the award in back-to-back seasons, 1986-87 and 1987-88.
• Miller becomes the first coach in MAC history to win the MAC Coach-of-the-Year award in three consecutive seasons ... his three total awards place him second in league history, behind only Toledo's Mark Ehlen (four-time MAC C-O-Y).
• Miller's honor marks the sixth time in school history that a BGSU coach has earned the league award ... Fran Voll picked up the MAC Coach-of-the-Year award in both 1986-87 and 1988-89, while Jaci Clark earned the honor in the 1992-93 season.
• Flynn is the first-ever Falcon to win the Sixth Man Award ... that award is in its fifth season.
• Mann is one of six players in conference history to be named MAC Player of the Year, MAC Freshman of the Year and MAC Tournament MVP during her career ... she joins Motycka, Ohio's Caroline Mast, Toledo's Kim Knuth, Kent State's Dawn Zerman and Western Michigan's Casey Rost on that exclusive list.
• Mann is only the fifth BGSU player to be named to the All-MAC First Team on more than one occasion, and the first since Sarah Puthoff (1996-97 and 1997-98) ... Motycka was named to the team in all four years, while Paulette Backstrom, Puthoff and Talita Scott each earned the honor twice, as has Mann.
