CHARLESTON S.C. - Junior Emily Gouge was one walk away from pitching a perfect game in the Falcons win over St. Bonaventure. Bowling Green State University split the day losing the first game 4-2 and winning the second 1-0. In two games, the Falcon hurler's retired 12 batters.
After posting an even 1-1 score through five complete innings, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies broke game one open with their three run inning in the top of the sixth en route to beating the Falcons 4-2.
Jeanine Baca led the Falcons from the plate going 3-4. Baca had two RBI's and scored Brittnay Hay each time. The Falcons had a total of five hits as a team.
"We didn't capitalize on the opportunities we created," said head coach Shannon Salsburg. "We were making contact, but we could not find the holes in either game."
Hayley Wiemer threw seven strikeouts in the effort.
With the season series tied at one, Gouge stepped to the mound and threw the first no-hitter of her career and the second for the Falcons this season. Gouge has not allowed the Bonnies to score in either meeting and was responsible for just three hits in the Mar. 3 victory.
Gouge is the sixth Falcon to toss a no-hit shutout. Today's blanking was the fifth for the Orange and Brown this season and third in which Gouge participated. She was solely responsible for the Maine (2-0, Feb. 23) and previous St. Bonaventure (2-0, Mar. 3) shutouts.
Dawnjene DeLong scored the lone run of the game on one of her two hits. DeLong was brought from the first base bag to the third base bag on a Wiemer single.
"It was pretty risky to signal her over like that, but there was a bobble on the play," said Salsburg. "Once we got her to third I knew I was done taking risks like that for the day."
The risk paid off and DeLong's score off a Bonnies past ball put the Falcons ahead for the eventual win.
In three games, the Falcons have outscored the Bonnies 5-4.
"Looking at the entire weekend, I am extremely proud of the kids, especially the pitchers," said Salsburg. Her Falcons went 6-2 in Charleston and outscored their opponents 33-13.
Bowling Green will compete in their last tournament of the Spring Mar. 16-18 at the USF Speedline Tournament in Tampa, Florida.
