BOWLNG GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team traveled to Chicago, Illinois over the weekend to take part in the Great Lakes tournament. The Falcons went 2-3 in five matches:
Lost to Michigan State (18-25, 25-17, 12-15)
Beat Clemson (25-19, 25-22)
Lost to Northwestern (17-25, 21-25)
Beat Iowa (25-18, 13-25, 15-3)
Lost to UConn (18-25, 25-20, 13-15)
"It was a bitter sweet day," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "We did some good things against some strong competition. However, we were inconsistent and that cost us an opportunity to play for the championship. In the opening loss to Michigan State, we gave up a lead in game three. That sent us to the Silver Division and Michigan State to the Gold Division and eventually the Championship Match. We played them so close two weeks ago losing 19-17 in the deciding game. Then having the control of the deciding game in Chicago and letting it slip away was very difficult to accept. Dropping the UConn match 15-13 in the third game was also very disappointing. But there were some moments when we looked really good. We controlled the Clemson match from start to finish and had a great finish against Iowa beating them 15-3 in the third game. We have very high expectations for this team and we were looking for a more consistent performance."
As mentioned above, the Falcons qualified for the Silver division ahead of schools such as Texas, Western Michigan, Kansas, Clemson, and North Carolina.
The championship featured Michigan vs. Michigan State. BGSU came up just short against Michigan State a few weeks ago as well, dropping a heart-breaking 17-19 game three.
Madeline Means and Stephanie Swiger led the team offensively hitting .327 and .321 respectively for the day. Elizabeth Simon led the team with nine service aces. Defensively, Chelsey Meek led the way with 47 digs. Kendra Halm, Corrie Mills, and Swiger all recorded double-digit blocks for the day.
