BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A four-run eighth inning for Kent State doomed the Falcons in an 8-4 loss Friday afternoon in the weekend series opener. The contest stood at a 4-4 stalemate after seven innings played before the Golden Flash four-spot in the eighth created the 8-4 final score.
Following a KSU run in the bottom of the first, BGSU notched a run of their own in the next half inning. Sophomore Brian Hangbers began the second stanza by hustling out an infield single. Senior Josh Dietz followed with another single to put a pair of runners aboard. The runners were both advanced into scoring position thanks to a Jeff Telmanik sacrifice bunt. Next up was Senior Kurt Wells, who delivered an RBI-single into center field, scoring Hangbers to even the score at one run apiece. The Falcon second inning then ended via a double play.
Senior Eric Lawson, 2006's most walked player in the Mid-American Conference, drew another free pass to open the third inning. Sophomore Marty Baird stepped into the batter's box and recorded on one of his four hits in the game, an RBI-double into the left-center field gap to give the Falcons a one-run advantage. The lead would not last long, however, as the Golden Flashes tied it back up with a lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Both pitching staffs were unharmed the next two innings until the bats heated up once again in the seventh frame. Lawson got ahead of a pitch in the top of the inning, pulling it over the left field fence for his second homerun of the season. Two singles by Baird and Junior Andrew Foster produced Bowling Green's fourth score of the contest. Kent State responded with two runs as well in the home-half of the inning for a 4-4 score.
After a "1-2-3" inning for Bowling Green in the eighth, the Golden Flashes scarred the Falcons for four more runs in the bottom of inning. The Brown and Orange managed to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth with a bases loaded, one-out situation. Unfortunately, Foster hit a groundball to the left side where the third baseman touched third base for the first out before rifling the ball across the diamond to first base for the game-ending double play.
Bowling Green and Kent State get back at again Saturday afternoon in Kent, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
