BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Denise Van De Walle and the Falcons put the pieces together in their final match at the Dayton Flyer Classic as they defeated the IPFW Mastodons, 3-0 earlier tonight.
For the third straight match Corey Domek led the Falcons offensive arsenal with 17 kills. Madeline Means recorded 11 kills and 10 digs, picking up her second double-double of the season. Meghan Mohr quarterbacked the offense with 34 assists.
The Falcons came out hungry for victory and took an early 13-4 lead. Defense was a key role in game one with five blocks and 19 digs limiting the Mastodons to a mere .087% hitting percentage. The stellar defense allowed the Falcon offense to take charge totaling 13 kills with a .220 hitting percentage, winning 30-26.
Although the Mastodons offense was kept under wraps in game one they broke out in game two, making it more difficult for the Falcons. The game was point for point most of the way through until the Falcons pulled away with a five point run started by a Domek kill giving them the lead 27-22. The Falcons closed the second game with a kill from Corrie Mills assisted by Mohr, 30-26.
Game three was another tight race with neither team taking more than a four point lead at any time. Late in the game after a four point Mastodon run the brown and orange found themselves behind 27-23, but they never gave up. After a Bowling Green time out the Falcons rallied behind a kill by Mohr to get on a five point run putting them at game point 29-27. Stephanie Swiger finished the match with a kill assisted by Means, 30-28, which gave the Falcons their first win of the 2007 season.
"It felt good to get the win," said BGSU head coach Denise Van De Walle. "We got a lot of production out of our left sides Corey Domek and Madeline Means. They both had great offensive matches at the net. Our passing finally picked up and looked more like last years. We were very steady throughout the match, even in game three when we were down 27-23."
Domek was named to the Dayton Flyer Classic All-Tournament team because of her outstanding performance this weekend leading the Falcons in all three matches. She totaled 50 kills averaging 4.55 kills per game and hitting .354 for the weekend.
"She (Domek) was definitely our pick for All-Tournament and had three great matches," said Van De Walle. "Her numbers were impressive and she was fun to watch this weekend."
The orange and brown faced three tough teams, ending their first weekend with a record of 1-2. The Falcons fought hard in two four game matches but were unable to capture victory against University of Illinois and University of Dayton.
"This was a much tougher start for us than in years past," said Van De Walle. "Both Illinois and Dayton are big physical teams. We were right there in both matches, if a few things would have fallen differently we would have found ourselves on top."
The Falcons look ahead to their home game opener on Tuesday (Aug. 28) as they take on non-conference opponent Oakland University at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
"We are all very excited to play in Anderson Arena and looking forward to Oakland on Tuesday," said Van De Walle.
