Falcons Host Oakland in Home Opener on Tuesday

The BGSU volleyball team is in pursuit for another record breaking match when they host Oakland University, Tuesday (Aug. 28) at Anderson Arena. The match starts at 7:00 p.m.
The Falcons have been unstoppable against the Golden Grizzles with an all-time series record of 10-0. The two teams faced off last year in Rochester, Michigan where the Falcons toppled the Golden Grizzles 3-0, and set a school record with a .500 hitting percentage. The Falcons had seven players hitting above a .400 for the match with Kendra Halm and Kaitlin Jackson hitting a perfect 1.000.
The Golden Grizzles are returning nine letter winners including all six starters. They kicked off their season at the State Farm/Vernon Manor Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio this weekend posting a 1-2 record, with a win over Southern Mississippi (3-0) and losses to Maryland (1-3) and Cincinnati (0-3).
SEVEN YEAR HOME OPENER WINNING STREAK
The Falcons have won their home opener for the past seven years. From 2000-2003 the Orange and Brown finished their home opponent in three games. For the past three years the Falcons have won their home opener in four games.
BGSU VOLLEYBALL HEADS WEST
The Orange and Brown will head west this weekend to compete at the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic in Fullerton, California. There, the Falcons will take on host Cal State Fullerton on Friday (Aug. 31) at 7:00 p.m. PT. On Saturday (Sept. 1) they will face Portland State at 10:00 a.m. PT and Stony Brook at 4:30 p.m. PT.
TITAN CLASSIC MATCHUPS
Falcons vs. Titans
The Falcons will take on host Cal State Fullerton to start the tournament. The Falcons have only met the Titans once in the past and were victorious in that meeting. The Titans return eight letterwinners, including three starters. They opened their season at the Bronco Invitational in Boise, Idaho where they lost to Santa Clara (3-0) and Boise State (3-0) and beat UT San Antonio (3-0).
Falcons vs. Vikings
BGSU volleyball will match up against the Portland State Vikings for the first time in history in game number two. The Vikings are currently 3-0 after winning the Air Force Invitational, beating Bucknell (3-0), Air Force (3-0), and Chicago State (3-0).
Falcons vs. Seawolves
The Orange and Brown are set to play the Stony Brook University Seawolves in their first ever match against each other. The Seawolves are 2-1 after a weekend at the Buffalo Invitational, with wins over Buffalo (3-0) and Baylor (3-2) and a loss to North Carolina (0-3).
FALCONS SWEEP IPFW
Head coach Denise Van De Walle and the Falcons put the pieces together in their final match at the Dayton Flyer Classic as they defeated the IPFW Mastodons, 3-0 on Saturday.
For the third straight match Corey Domek led the Falcons offensive arsenal with 17 kills. Madeline Means recorded 11 kills and 10 digs, picking up her second double-double of the season. Meghan Mohr quarterbacked the offense with 34 assists.
DOMEK NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT
Sophomore Corey Domek continues to put up impressive numbers after being named to the All- MAC freshman squad last season. Domek was named to the Dayton Flyer Classic All-Tournament team this past weekend because of her outstanding performance leading the Falcons in all three if their matches. She totaled 50 kills averaging 4.55 kills per game and hitting .354 for the weekend.
MEANS RECORDS TWO DOUBLE-DOUBLES TO OPEN THE SEASON
Senior Madeline Means had two strong all around performances on the court this weekend picking up two double-doubles. Means recorded 16 digs and 13 kills against Illinois and 11 kills and 10 digs in the Falcons win against IPFW.
25TH SEASON FOR COACH VAN DE WALLE
BGSU head volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle is in her 25th season with the Falcons. Coach Van De Walle has an all-time record of 442-303 with a .592 winning percentage. Van De Walle has coached BGSU to three regular-season MAC titles, two MAC East division titles, one MAC tournament title, one NCAA tournament appearance, and has been named the MAC coach of the year four times.
