WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nationally-ranked Purdue University got a pair of first-half goals just under a minute apart en route to a 4-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 16). The non-conference match was held at PU's Varsity Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Boilermakers improve to 6-1-1 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 2-4-0.
"Although the scoreline may suggest differently, today's game at Purdue was probably the best 90-minute performance that we have had this year," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We played very well at times, and were a little unlucky to concede so many goals early on. That obviously put us in the hole.
"The last hour of the game we matched Purdue, no question, and again, we were a little unlucky to be beaten by so many. That being said, the mood of the group is positive and upbeat. Pretty much everyone is healthy, and we have learned some valuable lessons through this non-conference schedule so far."
Purdue's Jill Sarbaugh scored her first goal of the season nine minutes after the opening whistle, and Felicia Schroeder added two more as the Boilermakers won their sixth-straight game.
Schroeder scored her two goals within 57 seconds of one another, giving the Boilers a 3-0 lead in the 28th minute of the match.
Sylvia Forbes closed the scoring with a second-half goal for the hosts, who entered the week ranked 22nd in the NSCAA/adidas poll, 24th by Soccer America and 30th by Soccer Buzz.
Purdue outshot the Falcons by a 25-8 count, and the Boilermakers had 15 shots on goal to BGSU's four. Jenny Bradfisch earned the win in net, making four saves in 77:20, while Carianne Betts did not face a shot in her relief stint.
For the Falcons, senior Tiffany Hansen made three saves in the first 45 minutes. Redshirt freshman Alexa Arsenault made her BGSU debut in the second half, and was tested early and often. Arsenault made seven saves -- a season high for a BGSU goalie despite playing only half the game -- on eight shots.
Richards and his staff used a total of 21 players in the match
"We have one more weekend to test ourselves before we get into MAC play, but we are very upbeat about today's performance," said Richards. "We have shown a lot of promise, a lot of progress, and I hope for a successful weekend next weekend and a successful MAC season."
The non-league slate concludes next weekend with games at Michigan State Friday (Sept. 21) and Youngstown State Sunday (Sept. 23). The Falcons host Northern Illinois on Sept. 28 to open the conference portion of the schedule.
