LEXINGTON, Ky. - Alicia Browning scored twice as the University of Kentucky downed the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team by a 4-0 count Friday night (Sept. 7). The non-conference match was held at the UK Soccer Complex.
With the win, UK improves to 3-0-1, while the Falcons drop to 1-2-0 on the young season. Laura Novikoff and Callie Lanphier also scored goals for the hosts.
UK got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute, as Browning deflected a cross from Ashley Stack into the back of the net. The Wildcats took that lead into the intermission.
Novikoff scored her third goal in as many matches, giving UK a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute on a header. In the 65th minute of play, Browning scored her second goal of the night on a rebound, and the Wildcats closed the scoring in the 89th minute with Lanphier's goal.
UK held a 15-7 advantage in total shots, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Laura Baker made three saves in net to earn the shutout for the Wildcats. For the Falcons, Christy Zabek had one stop in her 45 minutes of work, while senior Tiffany Hansen played the second half and made three saves.
Falcon freshmen had all three of the team's shots on goal, with Alicia Almond, Katie Stephenson and Jackie Tamerlano each recording one. Tamerlano made her first career start in Friday's match.
The Falcons used a total of 20 different players in the match.
"This was a very disappointing result, because I don't think a four-nil scoreline truly reflects the performance we had," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "It reflects the mistakes we made defensively, and the way we compounded mistakes to give away goals, but I don't think it reflects our overall performance.
"We threatened Kentucky on many occasions, had good possession of the ball, had some great opportunities, and had a very valid penalty appeal turned down when the score was 2-0. But, unfortunately we did not come away with the result we wanted. We just have to stop making defensive mistakes if we are going to have some success.
"However, we must not overlook the fact that we were competing against a good Kentucky team, who took advantage of our defensive mistakes. Now, we look forward to changing our fortunes and putting things right on Sunday."
BGSU will continue the weekend trip to Kentucky with that Sunday (Sept. 9) match, a contest at Murray State University. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. locally (1:00 p.m. Eastern) at MSU's Cutchin Field.
