MURRAY, Ky. - Sophomore Faith Juillerat scored early in the second half, lifting the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Murray State University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 9). The non-conference game was held at Cutchin Field.
Junior Christy Zabek recorded her first shutout of the season for the Falcons, who improve to 2-2-0 on the year. The Racers drop to 1-2-0.
Juillerat's goal came in the 50th minute of the match. The soph converted a pass from classmate Stacey Lucas to give the Falcons the only goal they would need.
"We are very happy to get the win, especially after a long weekend on the road," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "Any time you get a win, it is a good day, especially when you can get one away from home.
"Congratulations to Faith for getting the winning goal. She, more than anyone, has had a lot of health issues which she has been struggling with, and I was particularly delighted that she got her moment of glory today. She has had a lot of frustrations, but she has worked very hard, and she had a good day today.
"Congratulations also should go to the defense for the first shutout of the season. It is ironic; I don't think we played quite as well as we did on Friday (in a 4-0 loss at Kentucky). We could have had several more goals, as we had some great chances, and could have made it a lot more comfortable than it was.
"That being said, we are very happy to get the first road win of the year, and we look forward to preparing for two tough matches next weekend."
BGSU held a slim 8-7 advantage in total shots, including a 6-2 edge in the second half. Host MSU had four shots on goal to the Falcons' three, but Zabek stopped all four shots that the Racers put on target. Tara Isbell had a pair of saves for the hosts.
The match featured a total of 30 fouls, with the Falcons being whistled for 16.
The Falcons return home to prepare for Friday's (Sept. 14) match vs. Wright State. That game, the third in a BGSU soccer tripleheader that day (the Falcon men host the BGSU Invitational), is scheduled to begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. Then, the Falcons head to Purdue for a Sunday (Sept. 16) match. Purdue downed #1 Portland over the weekend.
FALCON NOTES
* Christy Zabek's shutout was her first of the season, and the sixth of her Falcon career.
* Faith Juillerat's goal was her first of the season, and the third of her career ... she is halfway to her point total for the 2006 season, having amassed four point (on two goals) in her freshman year.
* Juillerat's goal on Sunday was her first match-winning goal as a Falcon.
* Stacey Lucas has figured in the scoring of all three BGSU goals this season to date ... Lucas scored both Falcon goals in last Sunday's (Sept. 2) 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois ... with five points on the young season, she is just one point shy of her total for all of last season.
* Freshman Alicia Almond made her first collegiate start in Sunday's game ... she had come off the bench to play in each of the Falcons' first three matches of the year.
* BGSU is now 2-0-0 in Sunday games this season to date.
