FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Bowling Green State University hockey players Derek Whitmore and Dan Sexton have each earned weekly Central Collegiate Hockey Association honors as announced by the league office on Monday (Jan. 21). Whitmore earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career and second time this season, while Sexton took home Rookie of the Week honors to earn league honors for the first time in his young career.
The two forwards helped the Falcons to a weekend sweep of Western Michigan this past weekend with a, 4-1, win at home on Friday and a, 2-1, overtime win in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Saturday. The two wins give BG a 12-10-0 overall record on the season and a CCHA record of 9-7-0, which currently puts them in sixth-place in the league standings.
In Friday's series-opener, Whitmore tallied his third hat trick of the season and the third of his career as he lit the lamp in each period, scoring BG's first three goals of the contest. Sexton picked up the first assists on each of Whitmore's first two goals, including the game-winner in the second period on a way to a two-point night. The Apple Valley, Minn. native finished the night with a +2 rating, while Whitmore, one of BG's three tri-captains, finished +4.
The two hooked up again for the game's first marker on Saturday as well as Sexton found Whitmore on a crossing pass in front of the Bronco net for the game's first tally. The freshman forward then setup his second-consective game-winning goal just 1:20 into overtime as he was part of a three-man rush into the Bronco zone that ended in junior defenseman Kevin Schmidt's game-winning wrister from the left circle.
Sexton would finish Saturday with another two-point night and a +2 rating. Whitmore finished with a goal and also had a +2 to his name.
Overall, the senior forward from Rochester, N.Y. finished his weekend with four goals, recording a +6 rating. Sexton picked up four helpers on a single-game high two assists each night to finish the two league tilts with a rating of +4.
With his four goals, Whitmore now has 19 goals on the season, which ties his single-season high set last season. He is now just six goals away from entering the top-20 on BG's all-time career list for goals and is just 10 points away from being the 69th Falcon to eclipse 100 points. He leads the team with 24 points on 19 goals and five assists.
Sexton, Whitmore's linemate in the last six games, now has 13 points in his rookie campaign and a +2 rating. His is currently tied for fifth on the squad in points.
Both Whitmore and Sexton, along with their Falcon teammates, will be looking to ride the momentum from their season series sweep of the Broncos when they take on Notre Dame this weekend in a two-game home-and-home set. The two squads will drop the first puck at 7:35 p.m. on Friday from the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind., before they conclude the series on Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff at the BGSU Ice Arena.
