Falcons Take to the Road

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will travel to Rhode Island on Sunday (Jan. 27) to compete in a five-team meet. The host school Brown University will compete along with MIT, the University of Bridgeport, and West Chester University. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. and can be seen on a pay-per-view network for $6. The link to read more about this is as follows:

Bringing Down the Bears
The host school Brown University is coming off of a third place finish at Cal State Fullerton. The team posted a 183.025, and were led by Chelsey Binkley and Victoria Zanelli. Binkley finished fifth in the all-around with a 36.975 while Zanelli followed in sixth with a 36.625.
This will be the first time these two teams meet in competition.
Halting the Engineers
The Engineers are coming off of a second place finish in their last meet. Sophia Harrison won the all-around with a score of 37.850. Julia Zimmerman is the defending National Collegiate Gymnastics Associations All-Around National Champion, finished third in the all-around with a 37.000. The team posted a total score of 179.075.
Like Brown, BGSU and MIT have never met in competition before.
Breaking Down the Purple Knights
Last week in a tri-meet at Yale, the University of Bridgeport took second with a score of 185.675. Freshman Yvette Mirando took second in the vault, third on floor, and sixth on beam. Lorraine Galow finished third in both the all-around and the beam.
The Falcons met the Purple Knights back in 2006 where they were victorious by a score of 184.300-174.875.
Dimming the Golden Rams
In their last outing on the mats West Chester University fell to Southern Connecticut State University 182.975-172.225. Freshman Justine Basley captured the all-around with a score of 37.225.
BGSU has yet to face West Chester in competition.
Falcons Knock off Early Favorites
Last week BGSU notched their first win against Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan by a score of 191.950-191.525. The Flacons were led by sophomore Breanne Guy who won the all-around with a score 38.375. The team improved their overall score by over 2 points.
Power-Punch
The vault continues to be a strong event for the Falcons. They scored a 48.250 as a team and where led by Guy and senior Jacque Bernhardt. They scored a 9.750 and 9.725 respectively. Guy finished first followed by Bernhardt in third.
Bars Improves Greatly
Last week the team improved their vault score by 1.25 points. Leading the team was freshman Michelle Luchini who landed a huge 9.775 winning her the event. Luchini was assisted by Guy, who placed fourth (9.700), and sophomore Morgan Balzer who tied for fifth. (9.650).
New Faces Shine on Beam
Like on bars the team improved their team score by 1.5 total points. Guy again led the team with her 9.725 placing her in second. Freshman Abby Ashley made a huge improvement with a score of 9.650. Balzer also stepped up and hit a 9.525.
Floor continues to be Strong
The team continues to be strong competitors on the floor. For the second week in a row freshman Meg Satterlee led the Orange and Brown with her 9.775 tying her for first. Sophomore Queenita Gamble finished third with a score of 9.700.
MAC Standings
Currently the Falcons are 1-0 in the MAC and. 1-1 overall. As a team they have the fourth best score (191.950), while Kent State has the best team score of 193.475. Guy sits in fourth place in the all-around with her score of 38.450 followed by Balzer in sixth with her score of 38.050.
Bernhardt still hold the top score on vault of 9.850, while Guy still sits in second with a 9.825. Satterlee sits in tenth with a 9.750. As a team the Falcons vault score of 48.550 puts them in second behind Kent State's 48.750.
On the bars the team's overall score of 48.225 has them in fourth. Luchini's 9.775 has her sitting in second followed by Guy who is in 12th with a 9.700.
Guy leads the team on the beam with a score of 9.725 placing her in fourth. Jholeen Ponce has the 11th spot with a 9.675. As a team BGSU is in fifth with their recent score of 47.500.
Guy and Satterlee are again in the rankings, as they leads the conference on the floor with a 9.825. Balzer is tied for fifth with a 9.800. As a team the Falcons sit in sixth place.
On the Road Again
After Sunday's meet the team will stay on the road and travel to Kent, Ohio to compete in the All-Ohio. This meet will also be held on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. In this meet the Falcons will go up against No. 18 Ohio State and No. 23 Kent State. Following that meet the team will have a short week as they will travel to Muncie, Indiana to face MAC competitor Ball State on Feb. 8th at 6:00 p.m. The team will finally return home to face Central Michigan for Alumni Night on Feb. 16th at 7:00 p.m.
