FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the first time in his career, Bowling Green State University sophomore forward James Perkin has been named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (Jan. 7). Perkin tallied five points this past weekend against top-ranked Miami, tallying a goal and four assists, in helping the Falcons to a weekend split and two vital league points.
In Friday's contest against the RedHawks, Perkin had a game-high three points as he helped BG to its' first-known win over the nation's top-ranked opponent in 14 years. The Calgary, Alberta native scored a goal on the power play and added two helpers as his second period goal wound up being the game-winner, propelling BG to its' first victory over the RedHawks in seven contests.
The following night, Perkin picked up an assist on both Falcon goals, helping BG come back to tie the game after trailing 2-0. Though the Falcons would fall, 5-2, the effort tied Perkin for the team lead in points with senior forward Derek Whitmore as he has tallied a career single-season high 18 points (6-12-18) thus far thru the season's first 18 games, averaging a point per contest.
Perkin's two multiple-assist efforts gave him three for the year and tied him for the team-lead with five multiple-point games. He has now accumulated 12 points in his last eight games and seven in his last four.
BG currently sits at 9-9-0 and 6-6-0 in CCHA play as they are tied for sixth-place in the league standings.
The Falcons will hope to ride the momentum from this past weekend's success when they head to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. this upcoming weekend to take on the Lakers of Lake Superior State. The first puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday, before the two squads conclude their two-game set with a 5:05 p.m. face-off on Saturday.
