Sophomore Christine Chiricosta, junior Katia Babina and senior Stefanie Menoff all won their semifinal-round singles matches on Saturday, and all three will face opponents from host WMU in Sunday's (Oct. 12) championship round.
At the top flight, Chiricosta defeated Toledo's Martina Wodzinski in straight sets on Saturday, setting up a meeting with Western's Kerstin Pahl on Sunday. At the fourth flight, Babina downed Buffalo's Diana Toia in two close sets. Babina will meet WMU's Ashley Moccia in the final.
Menoff won her sixth-flight match over UB's Anna Subenkova in convincing fashion, and will meet WMU's Jenny Nalepa on Sunday.
The other three Falcon singles competitors all fell in semifinal action on the tourney's second day. Senior Kelsey Jakupcin lost her flight-two match to Amanda Moccia of WMU, while junior Samantha Kintzel was defeated by UB's Denise Harijanto. At flight number seven, Libby Harrison lost to WMU's April Kerr in the semifinals.
In doubles action, two of the three Falcon teams advanced to the championship round before succumbing. At the top flight, the Chiricosta/Jakupcin tandem downed a Ball State team, 8-3, before losing to Toledo's Wodzinski/Guirguis duo in a tiebreaker (9-8 [4]) in the championship.
At the third flight, Harrison and Menoff picked up an 8-3 win over a UT team, before falling to the WMU duo of Ashley Moccia and Rachel Denny in the final.
BG's second-flight team of juniors Babina and Kintzel lost to another WMU team in the semifinal round.
Through two days of play at the Fall MAC Invitational, BGSU singles competitors have a combined record of 9-3. Falcon doubles teams finished play with a total record of 5-4.
Western Michigan advanced a singles player to the championship round in all seven singles flights, including the seventh level, where a pair of Broncos will meet. BGSU has the second-most competitors in the singles finals. In doubles play, BGSU, Akron and Buffalo all had two teams make it to championship rounds. That total includes the fourth flight, where only four teams competed in a round-robin format.
The Fall MAC Invitational concludes on Sunday at Sorenson Courts, with action beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m.
