Andrew Goetz's Interview with Baker
The Bowling Green State University football team had a busy day with the media this afternoon (Oct. 20). Here are some of their thoughts.
Coach Gregg Brandon
On penalties versus Miami
"We watched all of them last night and really, the deal was the field position. We watched each penalty and then we watched the sequence of plays after the penalty. Like the opening drive, we kicked the ball out of bounds, hit a personal foul, get an offsides, so they start on the 40 and we give them 20 more. So, they only have 40 yards to go. That was the point that we honed in on last night with the team, that giving up yards, giving up field position...it's going to be harder to win games if we don't become more disciplined in that area. The four personal fouls, those are unacceptable. The other ones, they're not acceptable; I'm not condoning them, but that's in the heat of the battle. Hands to the face, they had as many hands to the face as we did. Sometimes they call it, sometimes they don't. Guys are fighting their tails off to make a block or make a tackle.
On consistent problems with penalties
"If one of our players cannot control his emotions, then we need to sit him down. That's the bottom line. "
On Partridge
"For a kid that doesn't practice much during the week because he's just so beat up, he shows up on Saturdays and just does a great job. He'll be the first one to tell you that he can go for a little bit in practice, then he's got to rest because he's got a bad knee and he's been banged up from a number of things through the years. He's a warrior. He's a competitor. He wants to practice. He's earned his stripes. He's a competitor and a winner. He shows up and he's making plays for us. That's what we need, that's what we ask him to do. "
