FAIRBANKS, ALASKA - The Bowling Green State University hockey team was unable to solve Alaska goalie Chad Johnson and the Nanooks tallied three even-strength goals to earn a 3-0 win Saturday night in Fairbanks to earn a split of the weekend series.
Bowling Green scored the only goal of the Friday game between the two teams with just over three minutes left. Johnson had 29 saves in that game.
Bowling Green, which is now 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA, played a strong game but could not get any of their 27 shots in the game past the Nanook goaltender. Alaska improved to 3-2-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in the league with the home victory.
Senior goaltender Jimmy Spratt, one night after recording his first career shutout, made 22 saves. The Falcons came up empty on all four of their power-play opportunities, all 12 for the weekend, while UAF failed on their three tries with the man-advantage.
One of the Falcons' many good chances to get on the board was a try by junior Kai Kantola with just over four minutes left in the second period. Kantola had put himself on the left post for a back door try, but couldn't get good enough control to put the puck past Johnson who was working his way across the crease from the right post.
"I thought we actually had some good offensive zone play tonight," head coach Scott Paluch said after the game. "I thought our attack time and time of possession was well in our favor. Alaska did a tremendous job tonight blocking shots and not letting pucks get through to the goalie and when they did he (Johnson) was outstanding. I thought our team did a good job getting the pucks, we just couldn't get enough pucks through the traffic."
The Falcons return home for a weekend series (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) against Nebraska-Omaha at the Ice Arena with the opening face-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
