CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has been picked to win both the Mid-American Conference's East Division and the MAC Tournament in 2009, according to the league's preseason poll. The poll, released Thursday (Oct. 30) morning, is the result of voting by members of the MAC News Media Association and the league's 12 head coaches.
The coaches, along with a number of student-athletes, gathered at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland Thursday for the MAC's annual preseason gathering.
The Falcons of eighth-year head coach Curt Miller were chosen to win the East ahead of -- in order -- Miami, Ohio, Kent State, Buffalo and Akron. BGSU has won four consecutive MAC regular-season titles, with a West Division crown in 2004-05 and three-straight East titles after being moved back to the East Division prior to the '05-06 academic year.
Miller and sophomore Lauren Prochaska represented the team in Cleveland on Thursday, meeting with various members of the media to discuss the upcoming season. Prochaska was selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team by the MACNMA. Miller has nine letterwinners, including three starters, back from last year's team.
A year ago, the Falcons went 26-8 overall and 13-3 in MAC action. BGSU advanced to national postseason play for the fourth-straight year, advancing to the second round of the WNIT.
Ball State was picked to win the West Division, followed by Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Toledo.
Fans get their first chance to see the Falcons in action on Tuesday (Nov. 4), when BGSU takes on Findlay in an exhibition game at Anderson Arena. The regular season opens Nov. 14 with a game at Temple, and the home opener is eight days later against Lipscomb.
