MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Bowling Green sophomore guard Joe Jakubowski made six three-pointers, but none bigger than his final one Friday night in the NABC Classic. He knocked down a long three-pointer as time ran out in overtime, giving Bowling Green a 77-76 win over Georgia State in the season opener for both teams.
Jakubowski scored a career-high 24 points, added six assists, and made 6-of-8 three-pointers as BGSU battled back from a four-point deficit with under 30 seconds to play in regulation. Darryl Clements made his only three-point attempt of the contest with 15 seconds remaining that stopped a four-minute BGSU scoring drought and got the Falcons back within one point at 63-62. After Georgia State's Chris Echols made two free-throws with 11 seconds left, Moten knocked down a three-pointer, one of 11 BGSU trifectas in the contest, with two seconds remaining to send it to overtime.
In overtime, Erik Marschall scored five of his 17 points early to give the Falcons a 71-66 lead. Georgia State stormed back to take a 76-74 lead on a Joe Dukes' basket with 16 seconds left. BGSU missed one three-point attempt to win the game but Marc Larson tracked down the loose ball, kicked it out to Jakubowski, and watched as he knocked down the game-winner as time ran out.
The two teams were an identical 26-of-59 (44 percent) from the floor but Bowling Green made 11-of-21 three-pointers and 14-of-17 free-throws. Georgia State was just 5-of-17 on three-pointers and 19-of-27 at the stripe. Along with Jakubowski's 24 points and Marschall's 17, Moten ended with 19. Clements finished with seven points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Bowling Green scored 19 points on 13 Georgia State turnovers in the first half to take a 33-30 halftime lead. The Falcons shot 50 percent from the floor and made all six of their free-throw attempts. But the Panthers were able to stay in the game on the shoulders of Xavier Hansbro, who went 6-for-7 shooting and scored 14 of his 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
BGSU jumped out to an early 9-2 lead behind a pair of fast-break baskets by Darryl Clements and a transition three-ball from Joe Jakubowski, who had eight points and three assists in the first half. The Falcons still led 15-8 but scored just two points during a stretch that lasted almost eight minutes before another Jakubowski three-pointer cut the deficit to one with 5:05 to go.
Over that final 5:05, the Orange and Brown scored 16 points and led by as many as six before a Hansbro three-pointer as the half ran out made it 33-30 at the break.
With the win, Bowling Green opens the season with a win over an NCAA Division I program for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Falcons will play the host school, Minnesota, Saturday at 8:00 p.m. central time on the second day of the NABC Classic.
Coach Louis Orr on the game: "I'm really happy for our team. They never quit, they never dropped their heads, they never gave up. This game showed us that you've always got a chance and you need to play with confidence."
Coach Louis Orr on Brian Moten's three-pointer to send the game to overtime: "Joe Jakubowski did a great job pushing the ball up the floor because we didn't have any timeouts. Moten hit a big three and he shot it with confidence and courage."
Coach Louis Orr on Joe Jakubowski's three-pointer to win the game: "Marc Larson did a great job chasing down the offensive rebound. Joe had shot the ball well the whole game, so it couldn't have ended up in a better player's hands."
Coach Louis Orr on the effort to get Erik Marschall the ball in the second half and OT: "I thought Joe Jakubowski did a good job handling the ball. We worked on getting Erik Marschall the ball, Jakubowski made some good decisions, and that opened it up for Brian Moten. We try to play inside-out."
