BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Sophomore Jen Uhl scored 20 points off the bench to lead three players in double digits, as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team opened the exhibition schedule with a 90-59 victory over the University of Findlay Tuesday (Nov. 4). The game was held at Anderson Arena.
Junior transfer Niki McCoy scored 16 points in her first appearance as a Falcon, while sophomore Tracy Pontius scored 14. Audra Mihalic led the Oilers with 14 points.
Uhl made eight of her 10 shots from the field en route to her 20-point night. As a team, the Falcons shot over 50 percent in each half, making 34-of-61 shots (55.7%) for the game.
A 17-0 first-half run put the game away. The visitors were within two points, at 13-11, with nearly nine minutes gone, and the Falcons had only a seven-point advantage with 8:51 left before halftime. But, a Uhl layup began that run, and a putback by junior Tara Breske gave BG a double-digit lead, at 27-16.
When junior Sarah Clapper took a kickout pass from Breske and hit a straightaway three-pointer, the Falcons had a 30-16 advantage. Two McCoy free throws were followed by a Clapper jumper, and the lead was 18 points. Still, the run was not complete.
McCoy made a layup, and freshman Victoria McGowan knocked down a jumper. Another McCoy layup capped the run and gave the Falcons a 40-16 advantage. The Oilers went exactly five minutes without scoring before Mihalic hit a triple at the 3:51 mark.
The Falcons took a 51-25 lead into the intermission, shooting 59.4% in that opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Oilers got as close as 21 points on two occasions, the last on a jumper by Ashley Westenbarger with 1:50 left. But, BG scored the game's final 10 points, including three steals and ensuing layups in the final 35 seconds. In all, the Falcon defense forced 24 UF turnovers.
BGSU held advantages of 42-20 in points in the paint, 26-12 in points off turnovers, and 19-0 in fast-break points. The Falcons' bench players combined for 47 points on the night.
The Falcons held a 35-29 rebounding advantage, with Breske pulling down a game-high seven boards and Uhl adding six. Freshman Jessica Slagle had five assists for the home team, while Pontius had four.
In all, 12 different Falcons saw action, with 11 finding the scoresheet. Nine BGSU players scored at least five points. McGowan had eight points in 11 minutes of action, while no fewer than five different players scored five points each. That group included Breske, Clapper, junior Laura Bugher and sophomores Lauren Prochaska and Kelly Zuercher.
The Falcons have one more exhibition, hosting the OGBR Legends on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Anderson Arena. That game, the second half of a Falcon hoops doubleheader, is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., and admission is free. The regular season begins on Friday, Nov. 14, when BGSU heads to Philadelphia, Pa., for a game at Temple.
