SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - The Bowling Green State University hockey team had a 28-20 edge in shots Friday night, but they could not solve Lake Superior State University sophomore goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson in a 2-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association loss.
The Falcons, who were shutout for the second time this season, both times in conference play, had nine or more shots in all three periods, but could not get a puck by Mahoney-Wilson, who came into the game with a 2-2 record to go with a 2.56 goals-against and a .932 save percentage.
Lake Superior scored at the 1:17 mark of the first period on a rebound goal by Josh Sims, his first of the season, and then added to their lead on a goal at the 9:17 mark of the final stanza. That goal came of a perfect pass to Laker leading scorer junior Zac MacVoy who was coming down between the circles and beat Falcon goalie Jimmy Spratt for his fifth red-lighter of the season.
BGSU had several good scoring opportunities, some of those coming on the five power-play opportunities the Falcons had in the game played in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Lake Superior failed on all four of their man-advantage situations.
Spratt was credited with 18 saves while Mahoney-Wilson stopped 28 shots. With the loss, BG falls to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-0-0 in the CCHA. The Lakers improved to 3-3-1 and 3-2-0-0. Both teams meet again Saturday night in the Soo with the opening face-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
"It was a slower, more methodical game and we just could never get into our rhythm," head coach Scott Paluch said. "We did a pretty good job all night limiting their opportunities, we only gave up 20 shots, but we just couldn't get a good flow going offensively. It was a game where neither team generated many real good scoring chances with both goalies handling most chances pretty easily. It was a one-goal game for a long time and you knew that next goal was going to be an important one for whoever got it."
