
Falcons Soar Past Golden Flashes

KENT, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle and the Falcons continued their winning ways as they swept Kent State (25-15, 25-15, 26-24) tonight (Nov. 7) extending their winning streak to seven matches. The Falcons improve to 21-7 overall and 10-3 in the Mid-American Conference, remaining tied for first in the East division with Ohio.
The Falcon offense dominated the net for the third straight match with 41 kills posting a .301 hitting percentage, while keeping the Golden Flashes to 34 kills and a .085 hitting percentage.
The Golden Flashes came out and took an early 5-3 over the Falcons in the first set, but the Falcons came back to capture the lead, 8-7 after a three-point run. The set continued to go back and forth with the score remaining close until a kill from Kendra Halm sparked eight straight points for the Falcons that two Kent State timeouts couldn't even stop, giving BG a 22-14 lead. The eight point run included four kills from Halm and two from Kaitlin Jackson. The Golden Flashes were able to finally side-out but didn't have enough to overcome the Falcons as BG scored the last three points of set. Corey Domek ended the first set 25-15 for the Falcons. The Falcons dominated the first set scoring 13 of the last 15 points. BG out hit Kent with 15 kills and a .300 hitting percentage compared to Kent's nine kills and .000 hitting percentage. Leading the Falcons' attack in the first set was Halm with a perfect performance at the net terminating six kills in nine attempts with no errors good for an impressive .667 hitting percentage and two blocks.
The Orange and Brown came out even better in the second set scoring seven straight points to open the set, 7-0. The Golden Flashes were never able to quite come back after the Falcons' early lead. Kent State was able to score points in a row but the Falcons extended their lead to 10 points, 20-10 after a three-point run started by a kill from Meghan Mohr. Domek once again ended the set for the Falcons will another kill, 25-15. The Falcons as a team had a near perfect second set with 12 kills and only one error posting a .393 hitting percentage.
BG got started early once again in the third set with a five-point run giving the Falcons a 6-1 lead over the Golden Flashes. However, Kent State fought back with a three-point run to cut the Falcons' lead to one, 8-7. The Golden Flashes put together six straight points to take a 16-11 lead. The Falcons never gave up and answered back with a three-point run to come within two of the Golden Flashes, 17-15. The Golden Flashes maintained their lead and secured set point 24-21. The Falcons once again battled back scoring five straight unanswered points to end the third set 26-24. The Falcon five-point run included a kill from Shari Luther and Jackson along with them teaming up for a double-block.
The Falcon offense was once again led by Halm with a near perfect performance terminating a match high 10 kills with only one error in 21 attempts hitting a .429. Mohr and Domek were both just shy of double-digits on offense each recording nine kills. Sam Fish ran the offense for the Orange and Brown dishing out 33 assists.
The Falcon defense was led by Chelsey Meek picking up 12 digs, her 85th straight match of 10-plus digs. Halm was also a defensive force at the net recording five blocks.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow night (Nov. 8) against Ohio, at 7:00 p.m. as the MAC East Division rivals continue to battle for the division title.
