Everyone Gets a Trophy
Per Monday morning's league standings, six teams - three representatives of each division - currently hold a 6-3 record in conference play ... Bowling Green, Miami and Ohio out of the East sit atop the leader board while Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Western Michigan look down on the rest of the West division ... if looking at the race through Orange and Brown glasses, to date BGSU has beat only Ohio but has dropped games to Miami, Ball State and Western Michigan ... Eastern Michigan will travel to the Black Swamp area on Saturday evening ... the Falcons will have a second crack at Ohio and Miami on the road later in the month.
Putting the West to Rest
Bowling Green has just two teams remaining on the schedule from the MAC West ... they will then travel to Central Michigan on Wednesday evening and will close the Western swing with a home game versus Eastern Michigan on Saturday ... to date the Falcons are 2-2 versus the MAC West including splitting a pair of road games (Ball State and Toledo) ... BG's twin wins in the West have come at an average of +25 points ... since departing from the West Division at the start of the 2005-06 season, Ball State and Western Michigan are the only teams from the division to beat BG.
Orange, Brown and PINK?
The "Think Pink" week for 2008 will be held February 8 - 17 ... the "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond ... in 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of the "Think Pink" a success ... BG will be the visiting school as Central Michigan holds their "Think Pink" game on Wednesday (Feb. 13) ... .Bowling Green will host their "Think Pink" game on Saturday, February 16, 2008 as the Eastern Michigan Eagles come to town ... tip-off is 7:00 ... the game will also celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day as the Falcons celebrate the female athlete.
Breske Named MAC POW Days After Setting Career Point Tally
Two days after scoring a career high 23 points against Northern Illinois, sophomore post player Tara Breske has garnered the title of MAC East Player of the Week ... the award is the first for the Temperance, Mich. native ... in the Falcons' 85-65 win over NIU on Saturday, Breske nearly double-doubled after finishing the game with nine rebounds and her double figure scoring effort ... on the boards she pulled down two defensive and seven offensive rebounds while also contributing a steal and an assist in the conference start ... from the floor, she was 9-of-15 (.600) and was 5-of-7 (.714) from the free throw line ... in the first half alone Breske connected on 7-of-10 shots and went on to contribute 16 of the Falcons 40 points in the paint versus the Huskies ... since cracking the starting line-up six games into the season in the Falcons OT heartbreaker to Notre Dame, Breske leads the team with her 54.5 field goal percentage going 79-145 from the field ... she averages 11.6 points since that Dec. 5 game and is good for an average of 5.6 rpg in 26.5 minutes ... through those 17 starts, she has posted one true double-double (Dec. 21, Delaware) and three near double-double's in MAC play - a 17 point /eight rebound effort at Buffalo, a 12 point/ nine rebound game versus Ohio and most recently her 23 pts./ 9 reb. outing on Saturday ... she has also scored in double figures in 10 games which she has started as a Falcon.
Double Punch of POW-POW
Wednesday (Feb. 13) Breske and the Falcons will travel to Central Michigan to not only close the western road portion of their schedule, but will also face MAC West POW Angel Chan ... on Saturday Chan scored 15 points in overtime, including the first 11 by either team, against Kent State in CMU's first MAC win of the season ... Chan hit three straight treys to start the extra frame and helped CMU pull away for an 87-70 OT win ... the junior finished 8-for-16 from the floor, including 5-of-11 from long range, for a career-high 25 points ... the only other times the MAC POW's met in league play this season was Jan. 30 when Kiley Jarrett of Ball State (West) and Lauren Kohn of Ohio (East) met in Athens, Ohio and on Feb. 4 when Tiera DeLaHoussaye of Western Michigan (West) faced off with Kohn in Michigan.
History and Herstory About to be Reality
As the Falcons battle deeper into their season both head coach Curt Miller and seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor are patiently awaiting as they are on the verge of re-writing the BGSU record books ... FOUR: with his winning ways back on track Miller needs three wins to tie former head coach Fran Voll's 144 record wins and an additional victory to own the record for most wins as the Falcons leader of the sidelines ... ONE: since coming to BGSU the seniors have experienced win after win after win after win and are one game removed from becoming what is believed to be only the seventh group to win 100+ games in MAC women's basketball ... the first and last to do so were the 1986-89 Falcons (100) and the 2004-07 Falcons' record setting 103 wins ... in the 90's four classes from Toledo graduated with the distinction 1988-91 (100), 93-96 (100), 94-97 (100) while the 95-98 Rockets boast a program high 101 wins ... the 1997-2000 Golden Flashes of Kent State are the only other group to come close with their 91 wins over four seasons ... TWO: all it will take is sinking the front and back ends of a trip to the foul line for Achter to become the "best' free throw shooter in BGSU WBB history ... over her career she has sunk 481 free throws to trail former teammate Ali Mann by a single made free throw.
Support Like None Other
As of Feb. 11, 2008 the Falcons remain as the overall attendance leader as they average 1,301 fans per game no matter where their contests maybe ... in nine home games, BGSU has seen a total of 14,091 fans fill Anderson Arena for an average of 1,566 - second best in the MAC ... through those home games, BG is on the fast track to surpass last season's record setting home attendance numbers (1,372 eight games into the home season in 2006-07) ... in conference only games BGSU is THE team to watch drawing an average of 1,600 bodies per game in the stands ... in Anderson Arena the women's basketball program plays in front of an average of 1,566 ... the significance? ... BGSU is on track to possibly overthrow long time attendance leader, Toledo ... for the past 17 seasons the Rockets have drawn the top average crowd.
Countdown to the `Q'
When the Falcons tipped-off on the afternoon of Feb. 9 an estimated month stood between the regular season and the MAC Tournament ... through head coach Curt Miller's tenure, the Falcons are 34-15 in the month before the March tournament ... dating back three seasons, BGSU is 25-2 in February.
Prochaska Frontrunner in MAC Freshman Scoring Race
Rookie Lauren Prochaska not only ranks fifth overall in the Mid-American Conference with her 14.6 ppg, but she also the leads the league's freshman class in the scoring category ... Prochaska is one of three freshmen in the top ten ... Akron's Keyla Snowden ranks t-8th overall in the MAC and second amongst diaper dandies with her 13.4 ppg ... fellow Zip Kara Murphy is 10th overall with her 13.2 ppg ... the three are the only youngsters listed on the top 30 scoring list ... in head-to-head competition both Prochaska and Murphy recorded 18 respective points while Snowden chipped in seven for the Zips ... Prochaska also lead the trio with her six rebounds and one block ... the Falcons went on to win the home contest 88-56.

As of Feb. 11, 2008 guard Lauren Prochaska also ranked amongst the top freshman in the country with her 14.6 ppg ... she is eight on the national list ... Jantel Lavender of Ohio State has taken over the top scoring position ... she also ranks 45 overall ... three of the top freshman rank among the top 100 average scoring efforts in the NCAA while only 13 have made it to the top 250 ... to break down the current list, Prochaska ranks first with her 53 made trey's - Richmond's Brittani Shells ranks second with 42 ... 11 have recorded 300-plus points to date; two are over 400 ... she is the 6th ranking player in free throws made (54) and 10th in field-goals made (114) ... the list is comprised of seven guards, four centers and two forwards ...10 conferences are represented on the list ... the ACC and the A-10 are both is represented by three players ... Boston College (ACC) is the only team to see two freshmen make the list.
Don't Hit the Panic Button Just Yet ...
Although the Falcons have suffered a trio of losses in the MAC, there is no need to assume their dominant reign over the league is ending anytime soon ... the Falcons are still:
• 35-3 in a road/neutral setting in MAC games since the start of the 2004-05 season ... through regular-season only road games they are 26-3 ... Kent State ('05), Eastern Michigan ('05) and Ball State ('07) are the only three programs to beat BGSU in their home arena's during that time ... in the past 21 regular-season road games the Falcons are 20-1.
• 99-21 over the past 120 games ... in the MAC alone they are 50-7 in the regular season since the start of the 2004-05 season ... with the inclusion of MAC Tournament games, BGSU is 59-7 in the same time span.
• After dropping three MAC West games by a combined 27 points - including two by a combined 6 pts. - BGSU has bounced back to win their past two by a combined 50 points ... the +30 margin over Toledo and +20 margin over NIU are the top two wins for the Falcons in the MAC this season behind their +32 point win over Akron to open the season ... in that UT/NIU series, BG outscored their opponents 74-44 in the paint while the Orange and Brown bench out produced the Rockets/Huskies 42-27.
Old Fashion Points: New Fashion Records
Its no secret senior point guard Kate Achter knows how to attack a defense and draw fouls ... since playing in her first collegiate game in 2004, Achter has made 477 free throws and is on her way to setting a new program record for FT's made over her career ... entering the season she ranked fourth on the FTM list (388) while finding herself fifth all-time in the FTA (510) category ... Achter has made 481 of her 632 chances ... she now ranks second and third in the respective categories ... 2006 graduate Ali Mann owns the records for both attempts (677) and makes (482) over a four-year span ... to tie the FTM record, Achter needs to net ONE free throw ... this season she has accounted for 93 made single-point shots ... she has been good for an average of 4.04 made free throws to this point in her final season ... twice, she has made 15-17 tries ... her .762 accuracy from the stripe is the second best single season percentage she has posted since becoming a Falcon ... as a frosh she was 121-156 (.776) ... Achter maintained a four-game streak where she had not missed a free throw in early Jan. and late Dec.
Bowling Green vs. Central Michigan "Quick Facts"
Bowling Green holds a 39-12 all-time advantage on the Chippewas of Central Michigan ... during the Curt Miller-era BGSU is 8-2 and has a six game run on their opponent to the north ... the Falcons only two losses have come on the road in Rose Arena including a low scoring 42-30 bout on Feb. 5, 2003 ... interestingly enough, Rose Arena may have a bit of a curse for the Falcons - in four regular season games on the Chip's court the Falcons have lost by 10 and 14 points while winning another two by 18 and five points combining for a -1 scoring margin in favor of the hosts ... at home on the other hand, BGSU has won by 18, 8, 14 and 20 points giving BGSU a +60 margin in Anderson Arena in the regular season ... in three regular season games Kate Achter averages 8.6 points, 5.6 assists and is 64.3 % (9-14) from the free throw line versus Central ... Whitney Taylor has seen one minute of action versus the Chips ... Lindsey Goldsberry set a career high in rebounds vs. CMU last season with eight; she has since tied it once this season ... in her last tangle with the Chips, Goldsberry recorded three assists and a steal while not committing a turnover in 24 minutes played ... sophomores Tara Breske and Laura Bugher have less than 10-minutes of combined experience against CMU.
