Dream No. 145
With the Falcons' road win in Oxford, Ohio on Saturday afternoon, head coach Curt Miller celebrated win No. 145 surpassing all other former BGSU coaches in the total wins columns ... Miller and Co. have won 21-of-27 games this season and each of their last six en route to securing the record ... when Miller first arrived in Bowling Green, he and the Falcons won a combined 21 games (21-37) and have since won 20 or more games in the following seasons ... the team will have three remaining games in the regular season to stretch that record before entering the MAC Tournament ... with his 145 total only Jim Larranaga (170-144) and Harold Anderson (367-193) of the men's programs have won more games than Miller according to Falcon basketball lore.
She's No. 2! (On her jersey ... in the rankings .... )
Lauren Prochaska not only leads the Falcons AND the conference with her 91.1% free throw shooting, but as of Feb. 24 the sharp shooter is the second ranking player in the NCAA ... only seven-tenths of a percentage point separate Prochaska from the leader, Drexel's Gabriela Marginean ... the Dragon's sophomore forward is 89-97 this season taking her to 91.8 ... Prochaska is 82-90 (91.1) ... had Marginean seen a free throw take an unlucky bounce OR would one of Prochaska's found a friendly roll, the freshman could be the national leader.
Another Day, Another MAC Winning Record
If Bowling Green can gut out a win on Wednesday night, seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor will BREAK the MAC (male or female) record for most wins in a four year career set last season by the Bowling Green Class of 2007 ... the current record stands at 103 wins ... Achter and Taylor met this mark on Saturday with their win over Miami ... for junior Lindsey Goldsberry's class to three-peat the 100-win tenure and then break the record again, assuming BGSU won only one additional game this season (taking the total to the new record of 104) Goldsberry and Co. would have to win 24 games next season to jump the junior to the 105 tally thus setting the record for the third straight season ... the possibility is very real seeing as the Falcons have averaged 26.67 wins since she first stepped on to campus.
We've Got Game (... maybe even two)
As the Falcons sit in first place in the MAC at 10-3 they are ONE game ahead of Miami and West leader Western Michigan ... both teams are sitting at 9-4 entering Wednesday ... ONE AND A HALF games ahead of Ohio (8-4) ... TWO games ahead of Ball State and Eastern Michigan (both at 8-5)
Fancy Meeting You Again ...
Freshmen Crystal Murdaugh and Lauren Prochaska each recorded double-doubles as the Bowling Green State University Falcons avenged last season's loss to the Ohio University Bobcats in Anderson Arena with a dramatic 60-45 finish. ... the game was played before 3,010 fans - the largest crowd in Curt Miller history ... Murdaugh, not only netted her first collegiate three-point field goal in the opening minutes of play, but she also finished the night with a game-high 17 points while tying Prochaska with her game-high 11 rebounds ... sophomore Tara Breske nearly joined the two with her 12 points and nine rebounds ... Prochaska and Lindsey Goldsberry each contributed 10 points to the win. Goldsberry also dished five assists and took home six steals ... Lauren Kohn and Jennifer Poff were the leading scorers for the Bobcats with their 18 and 13 respective points. The guard pair combined for 31 of the Bobcats 45 points ... Ohio's 45 points marked the third time in the past four games that the Falcons did not allow their opponent to surpass the 50-point plateau; in the remaining game of that group, BGSU allowed 56. In those four games combined, the Falcons have outscored their opponents 306-187 ... BGSU out-rebounded Ohio 40-34 and 10-5 on the offensive end alone ... entering the game Ohio lead the conference in total rebounds, offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds ... though the Falcons ended with a positive 15-point advantage it was not an easy night for the host team. In the first half alone, the lead was changed five times (BG 3; Ohio 2) while the score was tied four ... BG hit 6-9 free throws down the stretch as Ohio fouled the Falcons in an attempt to regain possession of the ball and game ... the last time the Falcons saw two rookies double-double was Feb. 21, 2004. It was also the last happening for BG in a MAC game as Ali Mann and Carin Horne led the fight against Kent State in what would result in an eventual MAC loss.
Achter's Accomplished Week Recognized by League with POW Award
After averaging a point/assist double-double in wins over Kent State and Miami, senior point guard Kate Achter has been named the week's top player in the Mid-American Conference's East division as announced by the league's offices ... the award is Achter's third this season and the fifth of her career ... te Oregon, Ohio native first complimented her 16 points with 10 assists as BGSU took a home win over KSU, 76-68, on Wednesday, February 20 ... at the half, Achter had already scored 12 points, but would go on to dish eight of those helpers in the latter 20:00 of action inside Anderson Arena ... in 38-minutes of play, she made six field goals and tossed in four free throws ... her 16 points versus the Golden Flashes helped her to claim a place in Falcon women's basketball history pushing her to a total of 1,440 career points with the Orange and Brown. The tally enabled Achter to soar to 6th overall on the all-time scoring list ... at Millet Hall on Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon, Achter helped to rectify an earlier loss to the Miami RedHawks with another 15 points and 10 additional contributors ... nine of those 15 points were scored at the free throw line as the tri-captain was 9-of-11 from the stripe; she hit six down the stretch as the Falcons secured their 10th win of the conference season ... her performance in Oxford, Ohio helped the all-time free throws made recorder holder extend her count to 506 and become the only player in Falcon women's basketball history to sink more than 500 free throws during their tenure with the program.
Debut Saturday
With their first combined double-double, Lauren Prochaska and Kate Achter did more than just help their team take over first place ... Prochaska's 407 total points placed her 14th on the all-time MAC freshman list just ahead of former Falcon Ali Mann ... if history is any indication of what is to come, 10 of the 15 players on that list went on to be named MAC Freshman of the Year ... Achter also made her way into the MAC annals posting the 19th highest single season assist count ... to date she has 187 helpers.
High Five
With his 144 wins, Curt Miller is amongst the top five active coaches in the MAC in terms of career wins ... just above Miller Miami's Maria Fantanarosa has won 155 games since 1998 ... Western Michigan's Ron Stewart has a total of 158 since the 1998 season ... Toledo's Mark Ehlen (1996-pres.) is the second winningest active coach and also holds the second most wins ever in the league with his 236 ... after joining the conference in 1990 as the head coach of the Kent State University Golden Flashes, Bob Lindsey has racked up 352 wins and is the overwhelming leader in the all-time win category.
