AUBURN, Alabama - The Falcons finished their stay at the War Eagle Tournament in Auburn, Alabama Sunday (Mar. 9) against Georgia Southern. This was the first meeting between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Falcons in program history. The Orange and Brown fell to the Eagles in a 7-0 decision.
The Eagles out hit the Falcons 9-4 scoring in the first, third, and fifth inning. BG had runners in scoring position in the third and fifth inning but weren't able to bring runners across home plate. Dawnjene DeLong got the Falcon offense started in the third inning with a single right back up the middle at the pitcher. Zada Lines followed that up with a line drive single down the right field line moving DeLong to third, but the Falcons weren't able to move runners home. In the bottom of the fifth inning Haleigh Bielstein led-off with a single through the left side of the infield for the Falcons. DeLong followed that up with another line drive single up the middle, moving Lindsay Arney to second after being walked, putting runners on first and second for the Orange and Brown but the Eagles were able to keep the Falcons scoreless.
The Falcons offense was led by senior DeLong who went two-for-three on the day hitting .667, which is her fourth multiple hit game this season. Freshman Zada Lines went one-for-two against the Eagles hitting .500. Lines is on a two game hitting streaking and has tallied at least one hit in six of the nine games this season thus far.
"During the weekend we had times where things came together but we are still looking for the consistency and the ability to put everything together and get the win," said head coach Shannon Salsburg.
Senior Allison Vallas was named to the War Eagle Classic All-Tournament team after posting .417 batting average and .667 slugging percentage for the weekend. Vallas tallied five hits in 12 at-bats, including a double, a triple and three RBIs. She is currently second on the team in batting average (.414), third in slugging percentage (.655) and tied for the team best in hits (12) and RBIs (7). Vallas has recorded at least one hit in eight of the nine games for the Falcons with a season high three hits and three RBIs against Lipscomb (Mar. 7) at the War Eagle Classic.
