Falcons Drop Two to Open Stetson Spring Classic

The BGSU softball team dropped two games Friday (Mar. 14) to open the Stetson Spring Classic. The Falcons faced off against the Elon Phoenix to start off their three day stay in Florida but fell, 4-3. The Orange and Brown then matched up against host Stetson who blanked the Falcons 5-0.
The Falcons struck first against Elon as they scored a run in the first and second inning while keeping the Phoenix scoreless. BG scored in the first inning as Dawnjene DeLong led off the Falcons with a base-on-balls followed by a sacrifice bunt from Zada Lines moving DeLong to second base. Hayley Wiemer was then walked to put runners on first and second for the Falcons. Rachel Delp then stepped up to the plate blasting a line drive to right field bringing DeLong home and moving Wiemer to third.
The Orange and Brown scored again in the second after Haleigh Bielstein reached on walk and Lindsay Arney laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. Bielstein then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored off of a wild pitch giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Phoenix fired back as they scored a run in the third and fourth inning off of a one-run homer in the third inning and three hits in the fourth inning, tying the game up 2-2.
Neither team was able to score in the fifth inning but the Phoenix were able to score two runs in the sixth taking a 4-2 lead over the Falcons.
With the Falcons down 4-2 going into the top of the seventh inning they were able to keep the Phoenix scoreless. The bottom of the seventh brought up the top of the line-up for the Falcons. DeLong led off with a single up the middle. With two outs Allison Vallas stepped up to the plate smashing a line drive to right center trading places with DeLong for a double and bringing the Falcons within one run, 4-3. The Phoenix were able to hold the Falcons and get the third out defeating the Orange and Brown, 4-3.
The Falcon offense was led by MAC East Player of the Week, Vallas who went two-for-three with .667 batting average and 1.000 slugging percentage, including a double and a RBI. Susan Sontag hit .500 batting average and DeLong hit .333 batting average scoring two of the Falcons' runs.
In game two of the day, the Falcons were blanked by the Stetson Hatters, 5-0. Both teams were scoreless in the first two innings, but the Hatters broke out in the third scoring the first run of the game. A rough fourth inning gave the Hatters four more runs expanding their lead 5-0. The Hatters were able to keep the Falcons scoreless winning 5-0.
The Falcons were able to record four hits against the Hatters with four different players contributing but weren't able to string any hits together to score. Rachel Delp, Susan Sontag, Dawnjene DeLong and Zada Lines each went one-for-three hitting .333 batting average and recording a single.
The Falcons will return to Patricia Wilson Field Saturday (Mar. 15) for a double-header taking on Cornell at 8:00 a.m. and Big Ten opponent Iowa at 10:15 a.m. Once again for all Falcon fans that can't make it to the live action on the field in Deland, Florida the Falcons will be live on GameWatcher via the internet.
