FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Bowling Green State University freshmen hockey players Jacob Cepis and Nick Eno have been named to the 2008 Central Collegiate Hockey Association's All-Rookie Team as announced by the league office on Monday (Mar. 10). A total of seven players were named to the 20th-annual squad as BG tied with Northern Michigan for the most nominations as each team had two players honored.
The nominations mark the first time that the Falcons have had a member on the team since the 2004-05 season when current senior defenseman Michael Hodgson was named to the team. Only six previous players have been named to the team, as Cepis and Eno became the seventh and eighth Falcons to be honored.
Cepis, a freshman forward from Parma, Ohio, currently has 31 points in his rookie campaign as he has tallied 15 goals and 16 assists. His goal and point totals are second on the squad only to senior forward Derek Whitmore, who has 27 goals and 36 points.
Overall, Cepis currently is tied for 33rd on the school's all-time freshmen scoring list. He is just two points away from being the Falcons' top rookie scorer in the past 13 years and three points away from being the top rookie scorer since Brett Harkins scored 54 points as a freshman during the 1989-90 season.
The 5-foot-8-inch forward finished tied for third in the CCHA in scoring among rookies with a line of 10-14-24 in conference play. His 15 goals rank second overall in the league among freshmen, while his 0.86 points per game average ranks 12th-nationally on the freshmen points per game list. He tallied four of his 15 goals on the man-advantage and had three go for game-winners.
Eno, a freshman goaltender from Howell, Mich., currently has a 12-9-0 overall record on the year with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. The 19-year-old netminder placed seventh among all goaltenders and first among rookies with a 2.51 goals-against average in conference play.
If the season were to end today, Eno's overall goals-against average and save percentage would both rank sixth on the all-time BGSU single-season lists, while his conference numbers would both rank fourth.
The 6-foot-3-inch goaltender allowed the opposition to score more than three goals against him just four times all season. He had six games where he made 30 or more saves and one where he made 40 saves as his 12 wins are the most by any Falcon goaltender in the last three seasons.
A seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres, Eno is just the third goaltender from BGSU to be named to the All-Rookie squad, joining Aaron Ellis (1992-93) and Bob Petrie (1993-94).
The two freshmen have helped the Falcons to 18 wins this season, which rank as the most for a single-season in the last decade and the most in 13 years. They will look to continue their success this weekend when the seventh-seeded Falcons head to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001 as they will face second-seeded Miami. The best-of-three series will start with game one at 7:35 p.m. from MU's Steve Cady Arena.
