BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Coach's Notes:
I've been on a bit of a hiatus from my blog lately but I have quite a bit to say. Our last two meets have been in Anderson Arena and I've decided there is no better place to compete. What awesome crowds we have had. The fans were really pushing us to do our best and it was just so exciting!
It's been a challenging couple of weeks. We have had some mid season injuries and I have been pleased with the team's ability to step up. We've been moving equipment between Anderson and Eppler quite a bit as well.
I have to take a minute to thank Greg Predmore and his crew for helping and, of course, Keith Watson and family. They really let the team relax and just focus on gymnastics during this time.
Other than that, school is in full gear and the athletes are very busy!
Our meet on March 14th was awesome. While Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan finished ahead of us, all three teams were within five tenths of a point of each other. We finally put beam together and our floor routines really ended the evening well.
March 22nd, we hosted the University of Kentucky. We saw improvement on bars but we struggled on beam. Hopefully we were just getting that out of our system before MAC's. Floor went well again though and I was pleased to see Anna Podgornaya make her routine after only training for a couple of weeks.
Two special events happened. It was senior night so we honored Candice Deacon, Marissa Saneholtz, Ashlee deLeeuw and Jacque Bernhardt. Jholeen Ponce was also honored, however she will be with us another season. This was my first recruiting class so it was amazing to see them already out there finishing their last home competition. They deserve a lot of credit and we will miss them dearly.
Secondly, we hosted a fundraiser for Shaohannah's Hope and An Orphan's Ticket Home. My daughter is adopted from Russia so it was especially poignant for me to see all the money being raised. I have to thank Amber Brewer for her organizing skills and the parents of our athletes that kept the fundraiser going during the competition. The team really came together to make that community service event happen.
Well, we are about to finish up here at the MAC Championship. I look back on the season and I can really see some positives. While I wish we had stayed healthier, I am so impressed with our team scoring over 193 several times this season. It was also exciting to see athletes break into the all-time scoring record books as well. It has definitely been a roller-coaster ride but I see so much greatness for next year. Both Bre and Jacque are in a good place to qualify to NCAA Regionals - one more meet to go to get them there. Going into the MAC, I want them to focus on our successes. They need to compete confidently and aggressively. I have high hopes for us to finish our season with hit routines and thus a great placing at the MAC Championships. Hope to see you at Kent State, 2:00pm on Saturday for a fantastic meet! Go Falcons!
