POMONA, Calif. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team set one school record and tied another on Thursday afternoon (March 6), in a 9-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona. With the win, the Falcons remain undefeated, with a record of 11-0 in dual matches.
The Falcons' win broke the school record for best start to a season. The old mark of 10-0 was set in the 1973-74 campaign.
BGSU's 11 consecutive dual wins ties the school mark (at any time of the season). The 2005-06 team strung together 11-straight wins as well.
In the latest ITA national rankings (released Tuesday, March 4), the Falcons are ranked 60th in the country. BGSU is the lone Mid-American Conference team to be listed in the top-75. Click here for the March 4 ITA rankings.
"We are excited about this win, and about continuing our successful start," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We have enjoyed the weather in California this week, and the team was excited to be able to play some matches outdoors. I believe this helped us keep our level of play very high during these two matches."
The Brown and Orange won every match, in both singles and doubles, on the afternoon. In doubles play, the top-two Falcon tandems won by identical 8-1 scores. Those teams were comprised of freshman Christine Chiricosta and junior Kelsey Jakupcin at the top flight, and senior co-captains Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle at the second level.
Sophomores Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, with an 8-3 outcome at the third flight.
In singles, the Falcons won five of the six scored matches in straight sets. The lone match to be deadlocked after two sets came at the top flight, where Jakupcin advanced past Jenny Tsai, 10-3, in a third-set tiebreaker.
Chiricosta was a winner at the second flight, losing a total of just five games. Babina and Kintzel dropped just two games apiece in their singles matches, with Babina winning a 6-0 first set at the third flight, and Kintzel blanking her fourth-flight foe in the second set.
At the fifth level, junior Stefanie Menoff lost a total of only three games in her straight-sets win. Volle rounded out the list of singles winners, with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the sixth flight.
"This was a good team win," said Dean. "Everyone contributed to the win, and everyone played well. We are excited about our play in California, and about our 11-0 start, and we now look forward to preparations for the MAC schedule."
The Falcons now have just over two weeks off, before beginning Mid-American Conference play with a match at Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 21.
