BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Falcon middle hitters, senior Stephanie Swiger and junior Kendra Halm, were named the Players of the Year as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team held their annual banquet on Sunday evening (April 13) at the Sky Bank Room in Bowen-Thompson Student Union. BGSU Head Coach Denise Van De Walle led the Falcons to an overall record of 21-9 and 12-4 in the MAC in her 25th season at the helm of the Orange and Brown.

Although middle hitters Swiger and Halm shared the honor of the Player of the Year they each received other awards as well. Swiger (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) was named the Outstanding Competitor and Halm (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) was named the Offensive Player of the Year. The middle hitters were an integral part of the team at the net this season combing for nearly 700 kills as they were both named first team Mid-American Conference for the second straight season and earned MAC East Player of the Week honors.
Freshman Sam Fish (North Branch, Michigan/North Branch) was named the Rookie of the Year. Fish took on the main setting role for the Falcons this season leading the team with 1,101 assists and 45 service aces, including a career high 75 assists against Eastern Michigan (10/13/07) and a career high eight service aces against Buffalo (10/6/07). Fish was named to the All-MAC Freshman team after dishing out 26 straight double-digit assist matches, including five double-doubles on the season.
Junior Chelsey Meek (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) was named Defensive Player of the Year, which comes at no surprise after she set all new BGSU dig records becoming the best digger in Falcon history. Meek now holds the record for career digs (1,624), digs in a season (629), digs per game in a season (5.62) and most digs in a five game match (38). She is only the second player in program history to hold all of the dig records.

Junior Meghan Mohr (Elida, Ohio/Elida) was given the Most Improved award for the Fall season. Mohr served two different roles this season in her normally hitting duties as well as stepping into the setting role at times throughout the season. Mohr was named second team all MAC with eight double-doubles on the season, including three straight to open the season.
Sophomore Kaitlin Jackson was given the Most Improved award for the Spring season. Jackson played in 14 matches for the Falcons this fall, including her first career start against Ohio (9/28/07) recording 49 kills and 14 blocks on the season. During the Falcons' four spring competitions Jackson recorded 18 blocks, which was the second best on the team.
The BGSU volleyball team not only creates success on the court but also in the classroom as six of the 2007 Falcons were honored with the Academic Achievement Award, which is given to those players earning a 4.0 GPA in either the fall or the previous spring season. Stephanie Swiger, Chelsey Meek, Kaitlin Jackson, Corrie Mills, Maggie Karges and Shari Luther were all given the Academic Achievement Award
