Falcons Overthrow Titans in Two Game Sweep, 5-0 and 9-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons remain undefeated (5-0) at home on the BGSU Softball Field as they overthrew the Titans sweeping them in a double-header Wednesday (April 16) evening, 5-0 and 9-1. The Orange and Brown are now 9-19 overall on the diamond and 7-2 in Mid-American Conference play. Falcons veteran pitchers each picked up a win against the Titans with Hayley Wiemer moving to 7-4 and Emily Gouge moving to 2-9.
The Falcon bats were led by freshman Missy Bowman going three-for-four with a 1.500 slugging percentage, including a homer and a RBI on the day. Four Falcons hit a .500 batting average. Hayley Wiemer and Allison Vallas both went two-for-four. Wiemer recorded a homer and a RBI, while Vallas recorded a double and a RBI. Freshman Melissa Bott and Haleigh Bielstein both went one-for-two each smashing a double on the day.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in both games scoring a combined eight runs in the first inning of both games, three in game one and five in game two.
"Today was an all-around team effort," said Head Coach Shannon Salsburg. "We had good pitching, solid defense and consistently hit from the top to bottom of the lineup, which is huge. The kids just did a great job of showing up and taking care of business today, which shows the strides we've made during the season and we hope to continue to make strides."
The Falcons will return to action at the BGSU Softball Field to defend their undefeated home field as they host Northern Illinois in a double-header on Friday (April 18) with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will finish their 2008 home stand as they host Western Michigan in a two game series on Saturday (April 19) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 20) at 1:00 p.m.
Game One Against Detroit Mercy
In game one of the double-header junior hurler Hayley Wiemer threw a two hit shutout, her third shutout and seventh victory of the season. Wiemer retired six batters from the circle, only walking one batter. The Titans recorded their only two hits of the game in the first two innings. A combined effort by Wiemer on the mound and the Falcon defense they retired 13 straight Titans to end the game, including four strikeouts and the sixth double play of the season.
After a three run first inning in game one the Falcons got their offense going in the bottom of third and fifth innings. The Falcons scored one run in the third as seniors Allison Vallas and Emily Gouge recorded back-to-back lead off doubles with Gouge driving in Vallas to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead over the Titans. The Falcons scored their last run of the game as Wiemer helped herself out smashing a sky-high homer over the right field wall, her sixth of the season.
The Falcon offense was led by Wiemer hitting two-for-three in game one with a 1.667 slugging percentage, including her sixth homer of the season and one RBI. Five other Falcons recorded a hit in Falcon's first victory of the day, including three doubles as a team, which is the fourth time of the season they have recorded three doubles in a game.
Game Two Against Detroit Mercy
In game two of the double-header senior Emily Gouge recorded her second win of the season only giving up three hits, striking out four batters in five innings.
The Titans scored first off of two base-on-balls and single, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons came right back to score five runs off of four hits to take a 5-1 lead over the Titans which they would build upon the rest of the game.
The Falcons continued to attack the Titans and score as they put up another run on the scoreboard in the top of the second. BG didn't stop there as they scored another three runs in the third off of a homer and two doubles. Freshman Missy Bowman crushed her first career homer over the center field fence followed up by fellow freshman Rachel Delp and Haleigh Bielstein hitting back-to-back doubles.
Gouge and the Falcon defense was solid throughout the second game as no Titan would reach base in the second, third and fourth inning. The Titans rallied to record two hits in the top of the fifth but weren't able to score falling to the Falcons, 9-1.
Once again in game two the Falcons had six players reach on a base hit with Freshman Missy Bowman leading the way hitting a perfect two-for-two with a 2.500 slugging percentage, including her first collegiate homer to center field and one RBI. Just like in game one of the double-header the Falcons recorded seven hits with three doubles and on homer.
