BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Kent State right-hander Chris Carpenter tossed a scoreless seven innings, allowing just two hits with 10 strikeouts, helping the Golden Flashes to a 15-1 victory on Saturday over the Bowling Green State University baseball team in game two of their three-game Mid-American Conference weekend series at Warren E. Steller Field. Carpenter was backed-up by a KSU offense, which exploded for 20 hits on the day as they jumped out to an early lead with a eight-run first inning, as BG found itself climbing uphill right from the start on way to dropping its' second-straight game and just its' third in the last eight games.
With the victory, the Golden Flashes improved to 20-15 overall and 6-5 in the MAC as their win-streak now stands at 10 games, while the Falcons fell to 17-15 and 6-5, respectively.
Carpenter, who earned the victory, improved to 3-2 on the season as he scattered both Falcon hits against him and walked just two batters. He would be replaced at the start of the ninth by reliever Steven Davis who worked the game's final two innings.
Carpenter had to wait 30 minutes after the game started to take the field however, as KSU made the BG pitching staff toss them 53 first inning pitches on way to scoring eight runs on seven hits to take a commanding 8-0 lead. A three-run homer by Anthony Gallas got the scoring started just three batters in, but unfortunately for the Falcons, it wouldn't end there. Ryan Mitchell later added an RBI-single with Cory Hindel, Chris Tremblay and Doug Sanders also collecting first inning RBI as Falcon starter Kevin Light was chased from the game after just a 1/3 of an inning.
Nick Cantrell came in relief of Light (2-3), who took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits, with one strikeout. Cantrell would toss four and 2/3 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits, before being replaced by Dusty Hawk in the sixth, who went three innings in front of freshman Dan Parsons, who worked the KSU ninth.
The Flashes added two more runs in the top half of the second to increase their lead to 10-0. They then plated single runs in both the top half of third and fourth to go up by a 12-0 count, which they held to the home half of the eighth.
The Falcons finally then generated some offense in their half of the eighth off Davis. Sophomore catcher David Borcherdt would be the sole reason for that offense, as he took a 2-1 pitch from Davis and put it over the fence in right center for his first homer of the season. He went on to finish the day 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI.
Also collecting hits for the Falcons on the day were Ryan Shay and second baseman Logan Meisler. Shay went 1-for-2, while Meisler also finished 1-for-2.
That would be all BG could get though as a three-run homer in the ninth by KSU's Jared Humphreys gave the game its' final count.
Humphrey's was 1-of-7 Flashes to finish with multiple-hits as he was 2-for-6 with, accounting for a run and driving in three others. Leading the way in hits was Greg Rohan and Sanders who both finished with three, while Gallas recorded a game-high four RBI.
The two squads will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled once again for 1 p.m. Live statistics for the game will be available at www.bgsufalcons.com, via gametracker, which can be found on the team's schedule page.
