BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Whitney Taylor, a senior reserve guard on the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team is listed as one of eight Mid-American Conference student-athletes to be named to the 2007-08 Women's Basketball Academic All-MAC team. With her nomination to the team, Taylor is the 21st women's hoops' Falcon to be recognized by the league for her accomplishments on the hardwood and in the classroom.
Taylor, a Visual Communications Technology major carried the second highest grade point average of the eight member squad with a cumulative 3.88 GPA. She was second only to Shari' Welton, junior from Northern Illinois who boasts a 3.94 GPA as a Communications major.
As a tri-captain of the 2007-08 Falcons, Taylor helped the squad to an unprecedented fourth consecutive regular season league championship before falling in double-OT to Ohio University in their quest for a complimenting MAC Tournament crown. In the post-season, Taylor and the Falcons won BGSU's first ever WNIT match-up with a first round victory over Dayton. In the second round, the Orange and Brown would ultimately end their season with a loss at Michigan State - a Big Ten team that would go on to reach the semifinal round of the postseason tournament. BG's final record of 26-8 was the fifth consecutive 20-plus win season in as many years.
The Wooster, Ohio native will leave the team owning not only the single game three point record, a claim to fame she earned after sinking eight consecutive three point field goals at Akron earlier in the season, but will also combine with Kate Achter to leave the program and the conference holding the record for most wins in a four year career. The 108 win record bests all previous tallies from both the men's and women's history books.
As a Falcon, Taylor has 108 wins and just 23 losses; she has seen the Falcons average 27 wins as a member of the active roster. She and the team will celebrate yet another successful season tonight (Wed., Apr. 2) at their annual banquet.
Faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions selected the team, consisting of four representatives from both the East and West Divisions. Additionally, the number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
