BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - It what could be viewed as a bittersweet moment, family and friends of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program were given one final chance to celebrate the 2007-08 season that was; the annual end-of-season banquet was held last night (Apr. 2) in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom inside of the BGSU Student Union.
Following dinner and a public viewing of the 2007-08 highlight film, Lauren Prochaska, Kate Achter and Tara Breske were officially presented with their major MAC awards. Because weather forced the league to cancel the pre-tournament banquet, the coaching staff took the time to recognize Prochaska as Freshman of the Year, Achter as Player of the Year and Breske as a member of the MAC All-Tournament team.
Next, assistant coach Kevin Eckert explained to the freshman class that they were joining a group of more than 4,000 living and deceased student-athletes who earned a letter while representing the Orange and Brown. After hearing their names, head coach Curt Miller presented each first year player with and helped them into their new letter jackets. The jacket is predominately brown with orange sleeves and an interlocking BG on the left front panel. To date, 142 women have worn the jacket from the women's basketball team alone.
A special presentation was also made to Maryann Achter and Pam "Peach" Taylor. The mother's of the senior class members were thanked for their efforts and contributions throughout their daughters' tenure with the program and were given a framed photo of the younger Achter and Taylor embracing and laughing after a victory in Anderson Arena earlier in the season.
Once the individual awards began to be distributed, Taylor was presented with the Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Fran and Marty Voll Outstanding Senior awards. Earlier in the day, it was learned Taylor was also a member of the All-MAC Academic team. Fellow senior, Achter, also took home two awards in the Player and Playmaker of the Year hardware.
Junior Lindsey Goldsberry was presented with the Falcon award, a distinction given to the player that embodies "what it means to be a Falcon" in all aspects of life, while Breske was named the Power Player of the Year for her outstanding season as a post player.
Prochaska, the Impact Player of the Year, was joined by classmate, Jen Uhl as the Most Improved Player of the Year.
To close the night, Achter and Taylor were given the opportunity to take to the podium to say thank you to those who have helped them along the way.
The Falcons, who completed their fifth consecutive 20-plus win season, will return to the hardwood in November to kick off their 36th season of women's basketball and 28th in the MAC.
