BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In what has become a habit of the Bowling Green State University softball program, yet another member of the squad has won the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week title. Senior Dawnjene DeLong brought the award back to the Falcons with the recognition of her efforts in her final MAC Tournament. The conference office made the announcement Tuesday, May 20.
The Physical Education/Teacher Education major nearly matched her 3.81 GPA with her .385 batting average at the MAC Tournament, ending her career with an 11-game hit streak. Her BA was the eighth best hitting percentage at the tournament and included five hits and two RBIs. She was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team as the Falcons, who were winless in the non-conference season, finished third overall at the end of season tournament.
As the Falcons concluded their 19-24 season (14-5 MAC), DeLong led all players with a .348 BA, a team high 10 doubles and was one of only three player to start all 43 games. As the lead-off hitter, her 47 hits this season translated into 29 runs and 18 RBIs. In conference-only games she posted a .339 BA, including four homers and a trio of doubles.
As the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week balloting comes to a close for the 2007-08 academic school year, BGSU softball leads all female MAC rosters, regardless of sport, with four awards this season - the Falcons female student-athletes captured the award a conference high six times. Additionally, since the week of April 3, a BG female has won on five of eight occasions.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
