The Bowling Green State University football team had a busy day with the media this afternoon (Sept. 15). Here are some of their thoughts.
Coach Gregg Brandon
On concerns about kicking game
"We won the kicking game, which to me against a team like Boise State is huge because they are fast and physical. When you watch teams you measure a team, their character and their heart by how they play special teams. Boy their special teams are really good. Iovinelli was outstanding punting the ball. Our coverage was good. We were just a block or two away on a punt return. Our kickoff return still needs work but it was better. The field goals were huge. Nobody is hurting more than Sinisa definitely. It could have been a 20-13 game with 11 minutes left.
"People say `Well the blue turf screws you up and the crowd noise,' as a freshman you buy into that but Sinisa is a veteran guy. What I told him was just stay in and see if there was anything mechanically you did wrong. He really evaluates himself and he's as hard on himself as anybody. So is Iovenelli. Usually when a kid misses a kick it's fundamentally related."
On Jerry Phillips
"We're still evaluating him. I thought Sinisa did a great job with the kickoffs. He put two in the deep left corner which is exactly where we wanted him to kick the ball. He stepped up in that phase. Jerry we are still evaluating. He's a good punter. He's probably going to be our punter eventually. As a kickoff guy he's not there yet, but he will be."
On the mentality going into bye week
"It's the same thing as going into last week, get better. We just have to get healthy, for one; a lot of guys are banged up. And just get back to the drawing board and get better at the little things that we need to do to pull off these wins. We have nine games left, hopefully we can get things turned around, go into these games and win."
On whether the bye week comes at a good time or if team wants to get back out and play
"It comes at a good time. Our team's really banged up. A lot of guys are down with injuries and we need to get them healthy. It came at a good time. We can focus on the little things and take a week to get better at that instead of just focusing on the next opponent."
On whether or not there were any positives offensively
"Yes, we moved the ball well. It just came down to us shooting ourselves in the foot. We got down in the red zone a bunch, and we didn't capitalize off of it. We moved the ball great but it seems like whenever we got the ball near the end zone we kind of stumbled a little bit."
On the recent turnover problems
"I think it's just a matter of us taking accountability for ourselves, and with me, I need to protect the ball more and as far as our ball carriers, we need to hold onto the ball. We haven't really had as many problems as we've had in the past two weeks since I've been here, and I think it's really hurt us."
On how it feels to only put up 7 points in the game
"Especially with Bowling Green being known for their offense, we should be putting up at least 28 points per game, I would say, and we really haven't reached that yet this year. I don't think we're reaching our potential yet. I think we've got to step back and look at the basics and fundamental things, and then we'll start putting up points when we get back to the fundamentals."
