CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's basketball junior Niki McCoy has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Jan. 5). McCoy earns the honor for the first time as a Falcon, but the third time in her collegiate career.
McCoy, a native of Sylvania, Ohio (Northview H.S.), is in her first playing season at BGSU after sitting out last year as a transfer from the University of Akron. She was named the league's Player of the Week twice during the 2006-07 season as a sophomore with the Zips.
McCoy earned this week's honor after averaging 18.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as the Falcons won a pair of road contests last week. She shot 60.9 percent from the field, going a combined 14-for-23 in the two games. McCoy made 8-of-10 shots from the free-throw line, and added a pair of steals.
McCoy had 20 points and four rebounds in the Falcons' 77-68 win at Dayton on Monday (Dec. 29), in the championship game of the Dayton Flyer Classic. She was named the MVP of that tournament, the second time in as many tourneys that she has earned that honor.
Then, McCoy scored a game-high 16 points, adding four boards, as the Falcons posted a 74-58 win at SIU Edwardsville to close the non-conference portion of the season. She was 7-of-10 from the field in that game.
On the year, McCoy is second on the Falcons in both scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). She has made 61 free throws in 76 attempts, leading the Falcons in both categories. McCoy also paces the Brown and Orange in field-goal percentage, making 49.2% of her shots from the floor.
McCoy earned this week's MAC P-O-W honor for the East Division. Central Michigan's Kaihla Szunko earned the West Division honor.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, 11-2 on the season, will take an 11-game winning streak into Wednesday's game (Jan. 7). BGSU will head to Northeast Ohio to take on Kent State University (11-1) in the MAC opener for both teams.
