BG hosts KSU in Centennial Cup matchup; Buffalo on Senior Day
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team wraps up the home portion of the 2009 regular-season schedule with a pair of matches at Cochrane Field this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will host Kent State University in Friday action (Oct. 16), with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ... then, the Brown and Orange will face the University at Buffalo on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 18), beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane ... following this weekend's play, the Falcons will have just three regular-season matches remaining, all on the road.

CENTENNIAL CUP
Friday's match vs. Kent State will be part of the Centennial Cup Challenge ... with both schools celebrating their respective centennials over the next few months, the teams are commemorating 100 years of competition with the friendly rivalry ... beginning with last weekend's football and volleyball matches in Kent, the competition will run through the remainder of the 2009-10 academic year before concluding with the 2010 football game at Bowling Green ... the competition is currently tied, 1-1, after the Falcons won Saturday's football game, but the Flashes captured that evening's volleyball match ... more information on the Centennial Cup can be found at BGSUFalcons.com.
SENIOR DAY
Sunday's Buffalo match will be 'Senior Day' for the BGSU women's soccer program, with the team's six seniors being recognized in pre-game ceremonies ... that six-member senior class includes Samantha Bland, Jen Czapka, Kaitlyn Kobe, Colleen Kordan, Stacey Lucas and Carolyn Nesline.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU has an overall record of 4-9-2, including a mark of 0-4-2 in MAC play, entering Friday's Kent State game ... the Falcons are 3-2-1 in home games, 1-6-1 in road contests and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches to date, and the Brown and Orange will be looking to snap an eight-game winless streak Friday ... last weekend, the Falcons battled Ohio to a 1-1, double-overtime tie on Friday (Oct. 9) before dropping a 2-1 decision to Akron Sunday (Oct. 11), on a goal with just over a minute to go ... the Falcons have scored 15 goals and allowed 24 this year to date ... BG's top-three scorers, and four of the top five, come from the sophomore class ... sophs Megan Amann and Katelyn Turner are tied for the team lead with eight points apiece ... another sophomore, Alyssa Zuccaro, has seven points on the year, while senior Colleen Kordan has six ... soph Leah Johnson has five points, while freshman Keely Chandler has scored four points this season ... the Falcons' 15 goals have come from nine different players ... Turner has a team-high total of three goals, while Amann, Chandler, Kordan and Zuccaro each have two ... Amann has four assists to pace the Falcons in that department, while Johnson and Zuccaro have three assists apiece ... four different Falcons – Johnson, Zuccaro, senior Samantha Bland and junior Alicia Almond – have started all 15 games ... Johnson leads the team in minutes played with 1331, while Almond has played 1258 and Bland 1250 ... in goal, redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault has started 13 matches, and has a team-high 58 saves and a goals-against average of 1.46 ... redshirt freshman Becca Ison has a GAA of 1.13, in nearly 159 minutes of work ... true freshman Laura Arnold has played 180 minutes, and has a 2.50 GAA ... head coach Andy Richards is in his 10th season ... he welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team ... the 2008 Falcons finished 12-6-4, and 6-3-2 in the MAC.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season at the helm, has proven himself to be one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... he has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 97-93-21, and a record of 52-46-11 in MAC regular-season play ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has as many trips to the league tourney title game as Richards (five) ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... BGSU reached an agreement with Richards on a two-year contract extension in May of 2008 ... his contract now runs through June 30, 2011 ... Richards had inked a three-year contract in February of 2006, marking the first time in school history that a soccer coach had received a multi-year contract.

• 60-53-10 at home, and 30-14-4 at Cochrane Field in the last four-plus seasons;
• 11-3-2 at Cochrane since the start of the '08 season;
• 48-64-13 in road contests in program history;
• 8-10-2 all-time in neutral-site matches;

• 2-0-0 in games played on Oct. 16 in the history of the program, with a pair of shutout wins (a 2-0 victory at Marshall in 1998, and a 4-0 home win over Buffalo in 2005);
• 1-1-0 in Oct. 18 matches over the years, including a 1-0 mark under Andy Richards (a 3-0 home win vs. Valparaiso in 2002);
• 46-1-2 in the last 49 games when scoring first (16-0-1 since the start of last season, with the tie coming vs. Ohio last Friday); and
• 0-15-3 since the start of 2008 in matches in which the opponent scored first.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Kent State will enter Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 7-5-1, and the Golden Flashes are 3-2-1 in MAC action ... KSU has already topped the overall win total for all of last season ... the team saw each of last weekend's two matches go to double overtime, winning one and tying one ... the Flashes downed Northern Illinois, 2-1, on Friday (Oct. 9), and played to a 2-2 draw with Western Michigan Sunday (Oct. 11) ... Kent State has played only three true away games heading into this weekend, going 1-2-0 (0-2-0 in MAC action) ... individually, Vanessa Salerno, Kelly Flanagan and Catharine Marosszeky are tied for the team scoring lead with eight points apiece ... Salerno leads the Flashes with four goals, while Flanagan and Marosszeky have three goals and two assists each ... FALCON NOTES
• The Falcons had nine corner kicks to Ohio's two in Friday's match (Oct. 9) ... then, two days later, BGSU had an 8-1 advantage in that category vs. Akron ... over the last four matches, BG has had a total of 32 corners, while surrendering just nine to the opponents.
• Eleven of the Falcons' 15 goals this season to date have been scored by freshmen or sophomores.
• Sophomore Katelyn Turner's goal in the first half of the Ohio game gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead ... it marked the first time BG had led since the Youngstown State game of Sept. 13.
• Turner's goal was her third of the season, the highest total on the team ... sophomore Megan Amann picked up the lone assist on the play, her team-leading fourth of the year.
• Amann's assist was the 12th of her career, the most among active Falcons ... in fact, Amann – again, a sophomore – is now tied for 10th place on the BGSU career list.
• Amann has 20 points in her Falcon career, the second-highest total among active BGSU players ... senior Stacey Lucas has 21 career points as a Falcon.
• Turner has matched her goal total for last season ... she scored three goals as a freshman in 2008 ... Turner trails only Lucas (8) and Alyssa Zuccaro (7) in career goals among 2009 team members.
WORKING OVERTIME
The tie vs. Ohio Friday (Oct. 9) gives the Falcons an all-time record of 18-14-25 in overtime matches ... BGSU is now 9-11-10 all-time in OT games played at Cochrane Field ... a few other Falcon overtime facts ...
• Believe it or not, the Falcons have a record of 7-1-13 in OT matches on the road ... BGSU is 2-2-2 in neutral-site OT affairs;
• BGSU is unbeaten in the last 12 OT matches, having gone 4-0-8 in that stretch ... the team's last OT loss was the Falcons' only road overtime setback, at Ball State on Oct. 19, 2007;
• BGSU went nearly four years without an overtime loss, going 5-0-5 ... after an OT setback vs. Ohio State on Halloween of 2003, the Falcons did not allow a 'Golden Goal' until Sept. 14, 2007, against Wright State;
• Beginning with that WSU game, the Falcons were winless in four consecutive OT matches (0-3-1) before a win at Miami (Oct. 21, 2007) began the current 12-match unbeaten streak.
