Chippewas Slog Past Falcons, 1-0
October 23, 2009 | Women's Soccer
Chelsi Abbott's first-half goal proved to be the winner as host Central Michigan University topped the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 23). The Mid-American Conference match was held in monsoon-like conditions at the CMU Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Chippewas improve to 14-3-0 overall and 9-0-0 in MAC play, and Central has clinched the MAC's regular-season title. With two games to play, CMU is now nine points ahead of second-place Eastern Michigan (BG's Sunday opponent). EMU moved into second place with a 2-1 win over Toledo on Friday.
The Falcons drop to 5-10-3 overall and 1-5-3 in MAC action, and BG remains tied for 10th place in the league standings. BGSU still remains alive in the race for a MAC Tournament berth. The Falcons are five points out of the eighth and final spot through Friday's play (teams earn three points for each win and one point for each tie).
With six points in MAC play to date, BGSU likely needs to win the remaining two games -- at EMU Sunday (Oct. 25) and at UT Thursday (Oct. 29) -- and get some help from other teams around the league.
On a rainy, chilly, muddy day at the CMU Soccer Complex, neither team could generate much offense. The teams combined for just nine total shots in the 90 minutes, with the home team holding the Falcons to only one shot attempt on the day. The rainy weather and slick field conditions made for a sloppy match, to say the least.
Abbott scored the only goal of Friday's match midway through the first half. She one-timed Stephanie Martin's centering pass, scoring a goal for the fourth consecutive match.
The rain further deteriorated the field conditions in the second half, and at times the ball literally stopped in puddles of water. The teams combined for only one shot and one corner kick -- both by the Chippewas -- in the final 45 minutes.
For the match, CMU had eight shot attempts to the Falcons' one, and the hosts had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Falcon redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault made two saves in the match, while CMU 'keeper Shay Mannino made one stop.
The teams combined for 42 fouls and five cards in the match, with the Chippewas called for 22 fouls and three bookings. Two of the cards -- including a red -- were given to the CMU coaching staff.
For Central Michigan, the shutout was the team's 12th in a row, tied for the third-longest streak in NCAA history. Central has not yielded a goal in 1,117:26.
