Grubb Wins Flight Championship at Queen City
October 04, 2009 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green State University tennis freshman Katie Grubb won a flight championship Sunday (Oct. 4), as the Falcons concluded play at the Queen City Invitational. The three-day, eight-team tournament was hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
Grubb capped her weekend by losing just one game in a straight-sets win -- 6-0, 6-1 -- over Lauren Pickrel of Ball State, capturing the D flight title in the process.
Two other Falcons had advanced to the finals of their respective singles flights, but were defeated in the championship match on Sunday. At the B flight, freshman Maddy Eccleston was downed by Toledo's Ashley Frey. In the C flight final, sophomore Jessica Easdale lost to Caitlin O'Gara of host UC.
Other singles action on Sunday included back-draw wins by both senior Katia Babina and junior Mary-Catherine Beck. Babina picked up a straight-sets victory over West Virginia's Ashley Pilsbury, winning both sets by identical 6-4 scores at the B flight.
In the D flight, Beck downed UT's Jacque Weir to conclude her weekend's play.
In doubles action, two BGSU teams squared off in the back draw at the B flight. The duo of Grubb and fellow freshman Jade Johnson defeated the Beck/Easdale tandem by an 8-2 outcome.
No team scores were kept at the tourney, which was held at the Queen City Racquet Club. But individual champions were crowned in each of four singles and two doubles flights.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean and assistant Cindy Yonker went a combined 3-3 in singles action and 1-1 in doubles play on day three of the tourney. Overall, BGSU singles competitors went 21-8, while Falcon doubles teams were 6-5 (with one of those losses, obviously, coming to a fellow BGSU team) at the Queen City Invite.
Participating schools in the Queen City Invitational included BGSU, UC, Ball State, Bradley, Dayton, Toledo, West Virginia and Xavier.
The Falcons will participate in one more tournament before the end of the fall schedule. BGSU will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Belmont Invitational on Oct. 23-24.
