Lindsey Butterfield Signs With BGSU Volleyball
November 18, 2009 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green Volleyball Coach Denise Van De Walle has announced the signing of Springfield, Ohio's Lindsey Butterfield to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period. Butterfield is the third player to sign during the period, joining Danielle Tonyan (McHenry, Ill.) and Paige Penrod (Circleville, Ohio).
Butterfield, from Springfield High School, was the Area Player of the Year in both 2008 and 2009. As a junior, she led her team to an 18-5 record by averaging 3.5 kills, 1.1 blocks, 1.3 digs, and 1.0 ace per set. In 2009, Springfield went 20-3 as she improved to 3.86 kills per set while hitting .570 and averaging 1.04 blocks.
“Lindsey is an intense competitor,” Van De Walle said. “She is self-motivated and plays hard. She brings fire to the court because she plays with passion. We loved that about her. I'm so glad she's part of our volleyball family.”
Along with being Area Player of the Year this year, she was also team MVP, first team all-county, first team All-GWOC, Player of the Year in the GWOC Central Division, and a member of the all-academic team. As a sophomore and junior, she was also first team All-GWOC. Butterfield was a three-time team captain.
“Lindsey is a fantastic person,” Van De Walle said. “She embodies the word 'student-athlete' as she carries over a 4.0 grade point average. She has a dream to be a facial surgeon, which I think is amazing. I'm looking forward to having her here in January and it will be great to get her going as a Falcon early.”
Butterfield plans to major in pre-dentistry at Bowling Green and will enroll a semester early, giving her time to get acclimated to the college game before beginning her freshman season.
The Bowling Green volleyball team is currently 13-19 on the season and upset Toledo in the first round of the MAC Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals. With that victory, Van De Walle won her 500th career match at Bowling Green to become the first coach in MAC history to reach that milestone. Prior to the 2009 season, the BGSU volleyball program had three consecutive 20-win seasons.
