Swimmers are Successful in the First Night of the Calvin Winter Invitational

Bowling Green, Ohio--The Bowling Green State University women's swim team nabbed the first- and third-place spots in the 800-yard freestyle relay in the first night of the Calvin Winter Invitational. The three day meet is being hosted by Calvin College at the Venema Aquatic Center.
The Orange and Brown 'A' relay squad, made up of Emily Bennet, Vicky Yu, Sarah Burston and Emily Waller captured the top spot, posting a time of 7:37.93. The 'A' team out swam the second-place competitors by almost three seconds. Teammates Jamie Akenberger, Andrea Brown, Megan Bomicino and Katie Womack snagged third place with a time of 7:46.45.
BGSU's top time tonight in the 800-yard freestyle relay is currently the second-fastest time in the Mid-American Conference of the 2009-10 season.
In the only individual event of the night,the 1650-yard freestyle, Megan Bomicino and Emily Waller both had strong performances. Bomicino swam to a third-place finish, posting a time of 18:00.77, while teammate Waller took seventh, swimming the 66 lengths in just 18:14.38. Both of these swimmers also competed in the two top-placing relay squads' just one event earlier.
After the first night of competition at the invitational, the Falcons hold strong in second place with 125 points. Trailing the Falcons is Hillsdale in third (69 points), Calvin in fourth (48 points), Kalamazoo, in fifth (31 points), Valparaiso in sixth (14 points), Saint Mary's in seventh (14 points), Northern Michigan in eighth (10 points) and Alma in ninth (6 points). Grand Valley State University is in the lead with 142 points.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow, December 5, at 10 a.m., for day two preliminaries of the Calvin Winter Invitational.
