Bowling Green, Ohio—In the Bowling Green State University women's swim team's last home stand of the 2009-10 season, the Falcons put up a tough fight, but were unable to keep up with the Toledo Rockets, falling 158-99. Tonight's loss reduced the Falcon's record to 1-4.
According to head coach Keri Buff, this is a difficult time of the season. “We are really tired right now,” said coach Buff. “We are a week and a half away from taper where all of our hard work pays off.”
In the BGSU loss, the Falcons still finished in top three spots on eleven different occasions.
Senior Meg Richardson's first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle was the Falcon's only first-place win of the night. Richardson stole the first-place spot in the 50-yard freestyle, sprinting in for a time of 24.01. After a short intermission, Richardson dove right back into the water for the 100-yard freestyle, during which she sprinted to a second-place finish, touching in at 52.10.
Other Falcons in the 50 free were Emily Bennett who took fourth, Carrie Enright who finished in fifth and Sarah Reinink for sixth. Like Richardson, Enright and Reinink were back in the pool following the short intermission for the 100 free in which they took fifth and eighth, respectively.
Two of the Falcons strongest performances of the night came during the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard backstroke in which three Falcon swimmers added points to BGSU's efforts in each event.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Alexis Kain captured second, finishing in 1:06.63. Coming in directly behind Kain was teammate and current record holder in the event, Amanda Rom in third with a time of 1:07.49, followed by Katie Womack in fourth at 1:08.69.
In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Jamie Akenberger posted a time of 2:09.66 for a second place finish, while fellow freshmen teammates, Alexa Harris and Emily Bennet followed directly behind her, taking third and fourth, respectively. Harris finished in 2:10.31 while Bennett finished right on her tail with a time of 2:10.51.
The Falcons started the meet with a strong showing in the 400-yard medley relay. In this event, the Falcon 'A' squad, made up of Harris, Kain, Vicky Yu and Richardson, took second place, posting a time of 3:55.18; the Falcon's second fastest time in this event on the year. It was a tight race, however, as this group came from behind and out swam the third-place Rocket team by five-tenths of a second.
In the third event of the night, freshman Emily Bennet nabbed the second place spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.89. Bennet's time in this event was only seven-tenths of a second behind a first-place Rocket win.
Like Richardson, sophomore Vicky Yu had two strong individual performances on the night. Yu captured second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.42) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.65). Yu's times in these events were the top Falcon finishes in each race.
Juniors Sarah Burston and Liz Harper also swam in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. Burston captured fifth in both butterfly events while Harper finished in sixth in the 200 and eighth in the 100 fly.
In the tenth event of the night, Amanda Rom swam to her second third-place finish of the night in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.87) Teammates Alexis Kain and Katie Womack followed right behind her, taking third and fourth places, respectively.
Despite the loss, Buff is not discouraged by the loss. “I'm really proud of how tough they are,” said Buff. “They have done a great job at training.”
In tonight's meet, the Rockets outnumbered the Falcons 25 swimmers to 18.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend (Sat. January 30) as they hit the road for Buffalo, NY, where they will face the Buffalo Bulls for their second to last MAC meet of the season.
