Bowling Green, Ohio—Meg Richardson had a record-setting night on the second day of the Calvin Winter Invitational; setting a new Bowling Green State University record, two individual pool records and assisting in two relay records at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Richardson, who is captain of the Falcon swim team for the second year in a row, posted a first-place time of 23.41 in the 50-yard freestyle, making it the new BGSU school record. Richardson's time in the 50-yard freestyle is also the new pool record at Calvin College. Just three events earlier, Richardson swam to her first individual win of the night in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.34).
Both of her times 50- and 200-yard freestyle events are the fastest times in the Mid-American Conference to-date.
Richardson was also involved in two relays that captured top honors. Relay squads of Richardson, Sarah Reinink, Carrie Enright and Emily Bennet took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.79) during the finals portion of the night, while Alexa Harris, Alexis Kain, Vicky Yu and Richardson nabbed first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:52.02). The top BGSU time in the 200-yard freestyle relay shattered the pool record of 1:38.15, previously held by Grand Valley State University.
Three other Falcon relays finished in top spots in the 400-yard medley relay. Jamie Akenberger, Amanda Rom, Sarah Burston and Carrie Enright took 3rd (3:56.67); Kristen Tetuan, Katie Womack, Marie Pope and Emily Waller took 9th (4:07.94); and Brittany Boone, Liz Harper, Megan Bomicino and Chelsea Kazmierski finished in 13th (4:15.25).
In the third event of the night, the BGSU women's swim team took control of the 200-yard freestyle. Falcon swimmers finished in first (Meg Richardson), second (Emily Bennet), fourth (Jamie Akenberger), seventh (Andrea Brown), eighth (Megan Bomicino), tenth (Emily Waller) and 18th (Chelsea Kazmierski).
Also taking top honors in individual events were Vicky Yu, Alexis Kain, Alexa Harris, Katie Womack and Sarah Burston.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Vicky Yu swam her best time of the 2009-10 season with a first-place finish time of 2:04.36. Her time is the 3rd fastest time in the MAC this season. Teammates Sarah Burston and Liz Harper also posted top times in the 200-yard butterfly; Burston finishing in 2:07.39 for fourth and Harper in 2:14.83 for eighth place.
In the next event, Alexis Kain captured first in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming the race in 1:05.59, her personal best time of the season. Finishing not far behind was sophomore Amanda Rom, who took 5th place with a time of 1:06.70.
In the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Alexa Harris posted a time of 58.13 for a first place finish. Behind Harris were teammates Kristen Tetuan and Brittany Boone, who finished in 9th (1:01.03) and 14th (1:07.37), respectively.
Taking first in the 400-yard individual medley, Katie Womack knocked three seconds off of her top time this season; dropping from 4:41.02 to 4:38.94. In the same race, Chelsea Kazmierski finished in fourth while Brittany Boone swam to 9th.
In the final individual event of the night, four Falcons sprinted in top spots. Richardson took first (23.41), Enright fourth (24.15), Reinink fifth (24.25) and Kain 12th (25.08).
At the end of day two of the Calvin Winter Invitational, the Falcons maintain their second place position in the ranks with 540 points. Grand Valley State leads the way with 650 points.
Day three of the invitational will kick off tomorrow with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
