Longhorns and Tigers Down Falcons at Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, California - Despite having the leading at one point in both games at the Judi Garman Classic the Bowling Green State University softball team dropped two games on day one against Texas (11-3) and Pacific (14-2).
The Falcons will return to the field tomorrow (March 13) to take on host Cal State Fullerton at 5:30 p.m. at the Anderson Family Field.
The Falcons opened the Judi Garman Classic against the Texas Longhorns Thursday morning (March 12). Despite leading the game going into the bottom of the second inning and only trailing by a few runs through the top of the sixth inning the Falcons fell to the Longhorns 11-3 in six innings.
The Falcons got their bats going early making contact right away and kept them alive throughout the game. Freshman Melissa West hit a hard line drive to center field in the top of the first inning but the Longhorns center fielder made a good catch to rob West of an extra base hit.
The Longhorns also brought their bats and got started early with a lead-off double to right center. The Falcons were able to get the next two batters but a two-out single through the right side put the Longhorns on the scoreboard first, 1-0.
The Falcons answered right back in the top of the second inning as Hayley Wiemer was once again give first base on walk. Zada Lines then reached on a fielder's choice as Wiemer was out at second. With two outs Karmen Coffey forced the Longhorn's pitcher to work and eventually was given first base on a base-on-balls to out runners on first and second for BG. Melissa Bott stepped up to the plate and smashed a first pitch double into left center to score Lines and Coffey giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead over Texas.
The Longhorns were able to score three runs in the bottom of the second. A lead-off single followed up by another single and a Texas homer accounted for Texas' three runs taking a 4-2 lead over the Falcons.
West got the Falcon offense started in the top of the third inning with a one out double to left field but two good defensive plays by Texas on back-to-back hard lines drives from Susan Sontag and Wiemer ended the inning.
The Falcons were able to keep the Longhorns scoreless in the third and fourth inning. A combination of Wiemer on the mound and solid defense led to consecutive one, two, three innings for Texas in the third and fourth.
Lines sparked the Falcon bats with a led-off single to center field in the top of the fourth inning. Missy Bowman then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lines into scoring position but the Longhorns were able to get out of the inning before the Falcons could score.
Lindsay Arney got the Falcons started with a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth inning brining up the top of the BG line-up with no outs. Rachel Proehl then laid down a bunt to try to move Arney, Texas tried to get the lead runner but Arney was safe at second giving the Falcons runners on first and second. With one out Sontag then loaded the bases for the Orange and Brown as she beat out a drag bunt to the right side for a single. Wiemer stepped up to the plate and hit a long sacrifice fly to center field to score Arney cutting the Longhorns lead to one, 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth the Longhorns were able to push across two runs to extend their lead to three, 6-3. Two Texas' hits and a Falcon error led to the Longhorns' runs in the fifth.
Still within a few runs of Texas Missy Bowman started off the top of the sixth inning for the Falcons with a single to center field. Bowman then advanced on a wild pitch but before the Falcons could score the Longhorns were able to end the inning.
The Longhorns opened the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases on two singles and walk followed by a grand slam to take a 10-3. Texas kept their offense going with a triple to center field followed up by a single to left field to score the final run of the game, 11-3.
Leading the Falcon offense against the Longhorns was Bowman going 1-for-2. Also recording a hit for BG were West, Sontag, Lines and Bott.
The Falcons matched up against the Pacific Tigers for game two of the Judi Garman Classic (March 12). Although BG was able to score first and keep the Tigers scoreless in the first two innings the Falcons fell 14-2 to Pacific.
The Falcon offense got started from the very beginning of the game as Rachel Proehl led-off the game for BG with a high bouncing single over Pacific's third basemen's head. Melissa West then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Proehl over to second base. A Pacific passed ball allowed Proehl to advance to third and a throwing error by the Tiger's catcher brought Proehl home and put the Falcons on the board, 1-0.
Pacific also came out firing as they recorded a lead-off single in the bottom of the first but Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to keep them scoreless.
With two outs in the bottom of the second Karmen Coffey was able to drop a single down the right field line that just hit the chalk line but the Falcons weren't able to score before the Tigers got the final out of the inning.
Solid Falcon pitching and defense made a quick second inning of the Tigers as the Falcons were able to record three straight outs and maintain their 1-0 lead.
The Falcons' themselves weren't able to get anything going in the top of third as it was a one, two, three inning.
The Tigers finally were able to get some offense going in the third inning as they scored six runs off of four hits and two Falcon errors.
The top of the fourth brought Wiemer up to bat for the Falcons as she led-off with a double to right center just shy of the fence. Zada Lines kept the offense going as she singled to center field. Missy Bowman was then give first base on a walk to load up the bases for the Falcons. With one out a seeing eye single to left field from Coffey scored one run for BG, 6-2.
Pacific was able to extend their lead over the Falcons in the bottom of the fourth as they scored eight runs off of five hits and three walks to take a 14-2 lead.
The Falcons tried to battle back in the top of the fifth inning but weren't able to score falling to the Tigers, 14-2.
Leading the offense was Coffey going a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI, recording her third multiple hit game of the season. Also picking up a hit for the Falcons were Lines and Proehl.
